Golfer Anthony Kim is Disqualified for Using Broken Club in Shanghai Tournament

Anthony Kim is currently the World number 8 golfer. During his first tournament as a European Tour player, his hopes were recently dashed in Shanghai when he found himself being disqualified from the HSBC Championships this past Sunday.

Anthony Kim is a young player at only 23 years old, so he has not experienced a lot of heart break in his tournament play just yet. According to him, however, he damaged his driver on a sprinkler head while playing on the seventh fairway in the third round during what was a $5 million dollar event. Unfortunately, this caused him to fall foul of a rule that forbid the use of a club that was damaged in any other way than during the normal course of play during the tournament.

Kim was pretty shocked, and according to him he did not believe that he would be disqualified. Kim, however, does understand that the rules are rules, and he has admitted to having no problem with the fact that there was a rule that disqualified him from play.

"I hit the driver at the tee, and I was walking with it like I usually do." Kim was described as saying after the incident, "I wasn't angry or anything, just walking down the fairway. The toe hit the top of the sprinkler."

Because his club was damaged while he was walking down the fairway and not while striking a ball or otherwise engaging in the tournament play, he was disqualified for continuing to use the club. Kim had clearly gained no advantage over anyone else through the damage sustained to the club. He hit a triple-bogey eight after two errant drives, and then dropped another at the ninth. After parring the 10th hole, he received the disqualification ruling. According to the senior referee for the European Tour, Andy McFee, he was disqualified because he continued to use the driver two additional times on the eighth tee, and both times the ball continued to go right.

What did work in his favor was the fact that Kim was the one who concluded that damage had been done to the head of his driver, and he was also more than willing to alert officials to the fact immediately. Unfortunately, because of the rules for the tournament, he still had to be disqualified despite the fact that he was proactive in trying to solve the problem.

Kim joined the European Tour for the first season of what is being called the Race to Dubai. His disqualification is just one in a string of misfortunes that he has been experiencing in recent weeks. He recently fell down a set of stairs, and also look a blow on the job from a horse, leaving him limping from the fall and unable to eat solid food because of the injury to his jaw.
