Phil Mickelson takes US Tour Championship Win, Tiger Woods Walks Away With $10 Million Dollars.
Phil Mickelson managed to ge the best of Tiger Woods during the US Tour Championship, but he still saw the World no. 1 player take the larger pay check, to the tune of a $10 million dollar bonus as he claimed the FedEx Cup Championship win.
Mickelson managed to pick up a $1.35 million dollar first prize after taking a final round score of five under par 65, reeling in the overnight leader Kenny Perry that had began the day with four shots in front of him, giving him a massive three stroke victory in front of Tiger Woods, who had started the round with two shots in front, but not for long.
Tiger Woods was chasing his overall seventh PGA tour title for this year, and he did well enough in his level par of 70 to claim the second place in the tournament and the big money bonus in the FedEx Cup as he claimed the title for this awesome prize.
Mickelson did a little bit of joking about the disparity in the paychecks that each of the men took home from the East Lake Golf Club which is located in Atlanta, Georgia, but he did recognize that the reward that Woods received was for a year of consistency as well as his performance during the play offs for the FedEx Cup.
Mickelson joked that it didn't make sense that he would shoot a 65 and Tiger would shoot a 69 and somehow Tiger would be the one that walked away with a $10 million dollar check. He was quoted as saying that it would have been better if he had played much better during the first few events for the FedEx Cup. He admitted that he played pretty terribly in terms of score. He hit well, he just didn't get the scores that he needed to perform well enough for the prize.
Phil Mickelson seemed plenty pleased to be holding the US Tour Championship trophy finally, at least.
Mickelson is going to be linking up with Woods and other American Players for the upcoming President's Cup, which is going to be held against the International Team in the city of San Francisco in about two weeks. Mickelson, who is the world No. 3 is already looking toward the 2010 season and his future after having to take time off during the middle of the season to take care of both his wife and mother, who each received a breast cancer diagnosis this year. He says that he is excited about getting away from 2009 and moving on with 2010, which he hopes will be a better year for his game.
