After three consecutive single point decisions at the Walker Cup, Buddy Marucci was probably wondering if the teams were once again heading for a showdown at the final hole.
With a lead of 6 points going into the Sunday singles members of the US team fell to mid-round struggles, giving the Great Britain and Ireland team a taste of hope. However, the Americans buckled down and won their third straight Walker Cup with a 16-9 victory over Great Britain and Ireland.
When all was over, Marucci, who is also a Merion member and grew up just a bit off the eighth green, stifled tears at the closing ceremony.
Peter Uihlein and Rickie Fowler won all of their weekend matches. Cameron Tringdale won an 8 and 6 game with the third largest margin to win ever in singles play
Rickie Fowler’s victory capped off a very solid amateur career. Tringdale’s win meant the US would keep the title, and Uihlein’s victory over Stiggy Hodgson took it completely.
This made the US teams win the largest since an 18-6 win in 1997 at the Quaker Ridge Golf Club in NY. The US lead the series 34-7-1.
Two points were all the US team needed in the Sunday singles to hold onto the cup, and 2 more to win the championship after scoring 3-1 in the morning alternate shooting matches that gave an overall 11-5 advantage.
Bud Cauley cut his singles in half with Chris Paisley and ended 3-0-1 for the US, which garnered individual wins from Morgan Hoffman and Brendan Gielow.
This was Marucci’s second straight title as a US captain.
Gavin Dear of Scotland, tried to engineer a Great Britain and Ireland comeback in the first singles pairing, and managed to post a 3 and 2 victory over Brian Harman.
Unfortunately the six point deficit proved to be too large an obstacle to overcome for the GB and I team under Colin Dalgleish, who was openly disappointed at dropping his second in a row.
GB and I’s other singles wins were made by Sam Hutsby, Tommy Fleetwood, and Niall Kearney.
Uihlein and Fowler who were teammates at OK state with Hoffman starred in the US squad.
Fowler, who delayed going pro until after his second straight Walker Cup, played the 18th hole just once, on Sunday morning prevailing 1-up with Cauley. He closed out his amateur career on the 17th hole and heartily shook hands with Marucci.
Fowler finished up with a 7-1 Walker Cup record, he was unbeaten in foursomes, and 3-1 in singles.
Uihlein was one of two final picks to be added to the 10 man team, and he proved his selection by going undefeated.
Uihlein then teamed with Nathan Smith who is the oldest member of the American squad at 31 years old, for a pair of alternating shot victories and had wins of 2 and 1 and 3 and 1 in singles.
