The tour championship field has been finalized finally after some dramatic Sunday play at Cog Hill this weekend.
John Senden managed to secure the final spot, the 30th spot, which is for this Tour Championship, which gave him at least somewhat of a chance of winning the $10 million dollar prize as well as a spot in 3 of next year's majors. How he made it to this point is surprising because it required quite a bizarre sequencing of some truly bad golf.
First, Senden managed to fail to do his part when he closed with a 77 following the BMW Championship. This included a wedge that he chucked so very badly that he ended up a full 40 yards short from the green, as well as a bunker shot that he practically shanked directly into a water hazard.
He managed to save himself a shocking finish from Brand Snedeker. He needed only to make two putts from only 12 feet away on the very last hole at Cog Hill in order to make a bogey and to earn a truly unlikely spot in East Lake, but then he ended up four-putting to claim a triple bogey instead.
This crucial miss involved a 3-foot putt for bogey that he accidentally attempted to jam right into the cup, but it caught the lip instead. Stunned by his miss, he turned around and missed two more from tap it in range.
He admitted after the tournament that he isn't really sure how he made such a mess of things.
Tiger Woods ended up turning this third event for this FedEx Cup into a real snoozer as he went 62 and 68 for the weekend to take an 8 shot victory, putting him right at the top of the standings for the final tournament of this year. So his play wasn't all that dramatic but it seems that the drama was coming from absolutely everybody else instead.
Stewart Cink, British Open champion was projected to be finishing out of the top 30 initially upon arriving at Cog Hill but he ended up going from 3-over during his first five holes to changing things up with an eagle and three birdies in a single stretch that allowed him to vault himself to no. 28 by the time he had reached the sixth green.
He took pars for the next three holes and took a birdie from 20 feet to finish out the no 26, getting a chance to at least play while at East Lake, which is the course that he considers to be his home course, located in Atlanta.
Cink is happy to be going to East Lake, Tiger is happy to be at the top of the leader board, and the final championship tournament of this year is going to be interesting.
