Paddy Going for a Third

Padraig Harrington, the defending champion already has two claret jugs seated on his mantle and he is currently going for this third in a row, which is a feat that has not been accomplished since 1954 through 1956 by Peter Thomson.

He seems to be ready for the British Open, feeling boosted as a result of his recent victory this past Saturday at the Irish PGA Championship tournament. From now on, he has to drop all of his hobbies in favor of taking the game more seriously than ever. Lately he has slumped from the World No. 3 position to World No. 12, and he only lasted four rounds in total in the past seven tournaments. But between now and Thursday, July 13, he is doing absolutely everything that he can possibly do in order to win a third Open in a row, as well as the fourth of the most recent nine championship tournaments.

For Harrington, control is truly the key to his success. He works hard to control everything about his life, including his golf swing. He spent too long this season trying to improve parts of his swing that he felt were in need of improvement, and it may be what has made him too busy to win tournaments this year. He has also tried to gain control of his fears, as he has been fearful of this upcoming match, as he strives for a third Open championship win in a row.

Despite his fears, this humble Irishman remains in a philosophical state. Fear is not his greatest problem, but rather he needs to focus on how he reacts to the fear. Padraig Harrington is a skilled player, and humble. He knows where he stands, and what he has both to gain and to lose when it comes to the British Open, which begins on Thursday. He is going to be going head to head with top players from all over the world, including Phil Mickelson who is playing for his wife, who is battling breast cancer, and Tiger Woods who is sweeping championships in an attempt to make a sturdy comeback following his knee injury and surgery.

Will Padraig Harrington be able to sweep this tournament for a third Open championship win consecutively, or will his fears and unease finally get the best of him?
