Golf Lexicon Continued

golferOut - This is a term that is descriptive of the course's first nine holes, because when playing these particular holes the golfer is typically moving away from the direction of the clubhouse. See "In".

Out of Bounds - This is a term that describes the ground laying outside of the boundaries of the golf course. Should a ball happen to be hit out of bounds, then the player is both penalized in stroke and in distance.

Outside Agency - This is any agency that is not a part of the match, or a part of the competitor's team when it comes to stroke play. Some examples of outside agencies include forecaddies, observers, markers and the referee.

Overclub - This is a term that is used to refer to using a club resulting in more distance than is needed.

Overlapping Grip - This is a type of grip where the little finger on the right hand is overlapping the area of the second finger and the forefinger on the left hand for a golfer that is right handed.

Pair - This describes a team of two golfers that are playing on one team in a stroke competition.

Par - This is a term that describes the number of strokes that are designated for each of the holes, representing a standard of good golfing performance. The par figure for each individual hole is added up in order to represent the total par for the course. Par is typically going to be based upon the length of the hole between the tee and the green, but adjustments are typically made as well based on the severity of the course hazards, the configuration of the course grounds and any other unusual or difficult conditions.

Par 3 - This is a term that refers to a hole that is typically up to 210 yards long for women players and 250 yards long for men.

Par 4 - This is a term that refers to a hole that is typically between 211 and 400 yards long for women players and between 250 and 471 yards long for men.

Par 5 - This is a term that refers to a hole that is typically more than 401 yards long for women players and more than 470 yards long for men.

Partner - This is a term that is used to refer to one out of a group of players that are playing on one side during a match.

Penalty Stroke - This is an additional stroke added to the score of a particular player because they violated a rule in the game.

Pick Up - This is a term that refers to taking the ball up before holing out. When it comes to stroke playing, picking up is something that incurs a disqualification. When it comes to match play, this incurs conceding to the opposing player.
