Golf Glossary pt 3

swinggolfballBold - This usually describes a putt that has been hit too hard, and therefore goes well beyond the intended target. It may also be applied to a shot that carries away too far.

Borrow - What this means is to play a put just to the side of the hole to compensate for a curve or a slope in the green.

Boundary - This is an imaginary line designated to mark the golf course's limit while defining what areas are safe to play in. When a ball extends beyond the boundary, it is said to be out of bounds.

Bowker - This is a pool shot that rebounds back into play after striking something such as a spectator, a tree or another unhelpful object.

Brassie - This is an obsolete name used to describe a 2 wood, as it originally had a sole plate of brass.

Break - This involves making less than a particular score. Examples are breaking par, breaking 100, and so on. This term is also used to describe what direction the ball roles in based on the slope of the green.

Bulger - This is an obsolete wooden club that was pair shaped and had a convex shaped face.

Bump and Run - This is the same thing as a chip and run.

Bunker - This is a hazard that consists of bare ground, typically a depression, and it is either covered up or filled up with sand.

Bunt - This involves hitting a shot that is intentionally short.

Burn - This is the Scottish word for a creek or a stream.

Buzzard - This is a score that is two strokes beyond the designated par for a particular hole.

Bye - This is a free pass into the next round during a match play tournament without requiring that the player compete in the tournament.

Bye Holes - These are the holes that have remained un-played because the match has already been decided.

Caddie - This is a person responsible for carrying a player's clubs. They may also assist when it comes to advice.

Caddie Master - This is a golf course employee that is responsible for all of the caddies.

Can - This means to make a putt.

Cap - This is the top end of the grip and the shaft of the golf club.

Card - This is the score card for a golfer.

Carpet - This is a large area covered by grass, such as the putting green or the fairway.

Carry - This is the length of travel that the ball takes through the air before it eventually makes contact with the ground.

Casual Water - This is water that has accumulated temporarily on the field but that is not actually a water hazard. When a ball lands in casual water, the player is allowed to remove it from the water without sustaining a penalty.
