arthurhillsLong Irons - These are irons with smaller amounts of loft that will make shots that go farther than the loftier irons.

Loose Impediment - This term covers any natural item on the course that is not solidly in place, stuck to the ball, or growing. Some items that could fall under this term would include animals, fallen branches, small rocks like pebbles, and other easily moved items.

Lost Ball - The rules of golf declare a bell to be lost if it meets any of the following conditions: If it has not been located within five minutes of the search starting; within the five minutes, a ball has been found, but it cannot be identified as belonging to the player searching for their ball; The ball is announced as lost by the player before five minutes of searching have gone by.

Low Ball and Total - This is a type of bet made by teams, points are scored by both the lowest overall score made by partners, and each team's best ball.

Lying - This term does not have anything to do with the term “lie.” Lying is used to announce how many shots that have been made by a golfer on the current hole. “Lying two” as an example announces that the player has already made his second shot on the hole and is due to make the third shot.

Mallet - This is a term to describe a type of putter that has a heavy, large head. This is reminiscent of something like the mallets used in croquet.

Marker - There are many uses for the term marker in golf. The item that marks the teeing ground's front boundary is one. Another is used to describe a competitor who has scored during stroke play. And markers that keep track of score or where a ball is are a few other uses.

Marshal - This is an official of a tournament that is charged with the handling of the crowd of spectators and ensuring that they maintain proper order.

Mashie - Another type of lofted club that has fallen out of use, although the five iron is sometimes referred to by this name.

Mashie-Iron - This is yet another type of lofted club that is now out of use which has a lesser amount of loft than a mashie had. As well, the four iron is occasionally called this.

Mashie - Niblick – For our next out of use lofted iron, we have the mashie-niblick, this is a club that has more loft than a mashie, but less than a niblick. Either the five or the six irons may go by this name.

Match Play - This is a type of competition where each hole of the course is a contest and the victory of the whole match is won by the team or player which has won the greatest number of holes. A hole where both teams make the same score is halved. In match play “one up” is used to designate a team that is one point ahead of the competition. If one team gets a lead that over the other that is greater than the number of the holes that have yet to be played, the match ends with that team declared the victors.
