Fairway Holes
1 - It is definitely easy for someone to accidentally lift a divot while they are playing on the fairway, either as the result of a poor practice swing or a proper golf swing. Do not feel bad if this happens, just understand what needs to be done in order for you to rectify the situation.
2 - You should definitely always make the time out to retrieve the divot that you created so that you can place it back in the hole that you created so that it can do some healing on its own.
3 - Once the divot has been put in it place, you should use your shoe to gently but securely tread it down. In time, the grass is going to be able to repair itself. Note that in the rough, this treatment isn't actually necessary in most circumstances.
Keeping the Green Clean
When the course has been damaged and the damage is unrepaired, this is bad enough. Small depressions and bumps are also capable of greatly impacting your play when using the putting surface. It can take many, many hours worth of work keeping the green in good condition, and yet a few moments of thoughtlessness can easily destroy it, spoiling it for everyone.
Repairing Pitch Marks
1 - When a pitched ball has landed on the green, it is likely going to leave a small indentation or mark where it has landed. You need to repair these pitch marks that you've created using a tee peg or a tool that has been specifically designed to suit this purpose.
2 - You can then tap your repair down using your putter, which is going to make sure that the damage is allowed to heal over the course of the night.
3 - Finally, agronomy studies are showing that it can take at least 21 days for a pitch mark that has not been treated to recover fully. While you are repairing the pitch marks that you have made, you can also look for other pitch marks around yours at the same time. There are always pitch marks around, why not repair someone else's pitch mark while you're at it?
Spike Marks
When spike marks are created on the line of play, they unfortunately cannot be repaired. As a result, you should absolutely avoid dragging your shoes in any way on the green that may end up causing damage to the terrain. Causing damage to the terrain that cannot be repaired is against good golfing etiquette, which is a good sign that you're a beginner on the course.
Place the Pin
1 - When you are on the green, you should always make sure that you are placing the flag down as gently as you can rather than throwing it or dropping it.
2 - It does not take much abuse for a putting surface that has been carefully prepared to show some truly severe signs of wear and tear from heavy use.
