Here is a continuation on the golf term glossary that we have been working on for a little while now.
Divot - This is a piece of the turf that has been cut out with the club head during a shot. The golfer that creates the divot is obligated to tamp down the divot upon replacing it.
Dogleg - This is a bend in a fairway.
Dormie - This is a situation that occurs in match play where a golfer is ahead by the number of holes that are remaining in play. If the golfer wins one of the remaining holes, or even simply halves it, then the match has been ended.
Double Bogey - This is a score that is two above the designated par that is set for a hole.
Double Eagle - This is a score that is three below the designated par that is set for a hole.
Down - This is the number of holes, during match play, or in stroke play it is the number of strokes that a specific player is behind in comparison to an opponent.
Downhill Lie - This is a lie where the right foot of a right handed player is higher up than his or her left foot.
Downswing - This is the portion of a swing from the backswing's top until the point of the impact.
Draw - This is a method used to pair opponents in play for a match-play style tournament. When used as a verb, it means to hit one draw shot.
Draw Shot - This is a controlled shot curving from the left to the right in terms of a right handed golfer, and it is hit deliberately either to get a position or to get the player out of trouble.
Drive - This is typically used to hit the ball away from the tee, though it is also used to hit the golf ball using a full swing as well as the maximum amount of force.
Driver - This is the 1 wood, which is the longest hitting club. This club is used most commonly from the tee because this is the shot requiring the greatest level of distance.
Driving Iron - This is an obsolete moniker for a number of iron clubs, though now it only refers to the 1 iron.
Driving Mashie - This is an obsolete club that is not as lofted as a mashie iron, and it was originally used for longer shots.
Driving range - This is an area where golfers are capable of practicing a number of shots including their tee shots.
Drop - This involves depositing a ball down on the course, putting it back in play after it had been declared unplayable or lost. Another name for this is free drop.
