Course History:
This course was first opened in 1951. Although it is a nine hole course, the Par 27 ranging over more than 1200 yards offers a challenging diversions for all levels of players. It is perfect for executives or for those who prefer a quicker round of golf.
What You Need to Know:
Please note that this course operates under a first come, first serve basis. You cannot reserve tee times unless you are a tournament player. If you are alone, you may be paired up or added to a group. If there is a wait on the first tee, players are queued on a first come basis.
There are a few rules at this course. First, all USGA rules apply and the course stocks a copy of these if you need a refresher. If you are on the course, you must pay the green fee, even if you do not plan to play. All players must have their own clubs and they may not share them. Rentals are available at the club house for a reasonable fee. Alcohol may not be brought on to the course, but they do make it available at the club house.
The course is open all year round and you can even play there on holidays. There is a practice range available complete with nets. There are 10 stalls and lessons are also available. If you do need to rent clubs to practice, there is no fee if you purchase a bucket of balls. These start at $4. Their Beyond the Ball training lessons are available both on the practice range or on the course and rates are extremely reasonable. The PGA coach is friendly and offers helpful tips on numerous areas of the game. Their motto is less and more and they pride themselves on offering frustration free lessons.
Ironwood BBQ is located on the course and offers authentic BBQ with sauce that is made from scratch right at the club. This is a favorite stop for many locals. Lessons are made available all year round for both adults and juniors. The restaurant offers eat in as well as carryout and features a terrific menu. You can order ahead by phone or place your order while you're at the course.
Numerous special events are hosted at the course all year round and catering is available as well. Even though the course is located just minutes from downtown San Francisco, locals consider it to be an oasis complete with majestic cypress trees and a magnificent feeling of calm. The course offers free parking.
Playing Hints:
This is a pretty easy course to master but look out for holes number four and seven. They are by far the most challenging. You'll be dealing with two bunkers before the green on the fourth hole, so keep this in mind when you make your approach. You may want to use a 3 or 5 wood for your second shot to power past them.
