Course History:
Gleneagles is one of the finest golf courses in San Francisco and the rates are incredibly reasonable given the quality of the course. It was built in 1962 and quickly became a favorite among locals and visitors. The cypress lined fairways and challenging terrain can be a little daunting for some players, but overall, this course is well suited for most players.
What You Need to Know:
The topography and slick greens make this a challenging course for most players. You'll want to try to be as accurate as possible to get a good score. Although it's technically a nine hole course, most people play a full eighteen. The 19th hole is absolutely incredible and offers a great place to relax for all players. After a round on this course, you're definitely going to need to kick back and enjoy all of the amenities.
Although the club does not specifically state that there is a dress code, it's always best to err on the side of caution and wear a collared shirt with trousers. Although it's a cheap course to play, they are very serious about divot replacement, so please keep this in mind while you're playing. They also enforce a pretty strict rule on fast play, so don't dawdle on the course. It's very popular so they do expect players to finish up in about 4 and a half hours if you're playing the full 18 or about 2 hours if you're only doing nine holes.
Playing Hints:
Accuracy is key here and you're going to want to practice putting before you arrive. The greens are incredibly fast and slick and it's best to try to hone your skills ahead of time if you don't want to blow your score. It's easy to watch a very good approach go to waste on these greens, so please keep this in mind.Overall, the course is challenging and we do recommend a cart since some of the hills are a little tough. It's a good idea to use one especially since they do want players to keep the game moving. The third hole is a par four that should help you salvage any damage done on the first two tees, but watch out of the fourth hole. It looks like a simple par three, but it's actually pretty difficult to master. The seventeenth and eighteenth holes are a great challenge if you want to try to get a par on this course, so do your best to have a really strong and accurate tee shot.
