Jim Furyk has taken home his first winning trophy in almost 3 years thanks to a win at the Transitions Championship on Sunday. He hasn't held a winning position in the last 58 tournaments he's played but won on Sunday with a -13 and by just one stroke over K. J. Choi. Furyk's big win came on a day when the golfer shining in the spotlight, because of a planned announcement to the media, wasn't the day's winner but a scandal-bruised Tiger Woods.
Furyk's last win was the Canadian Open in 2007, meaning that this win caps off the longest period of time he's gone without a win in his entire career. It was a hard fought victory and one that could have been stopped by Choi, but wasn't. This marks Furyk's 14th career victory and elevates him to world ranking #6.
Furyk pulled ahead at hole #1 to 3 shots in the lead, missed the birdie on 11 but recovered with one measuring 35 feet on hole 12 and another on hole 14. Two bogeys on par 3 holes sprinkled through made it harder to stay ahead than it should have been. There were even weather delays, stretching the last 9 out to over 6 hours, but the top players held fast throughout.
Choi was in a tie with the winner through the first 7, but fell behind on hole 8 and didn't close the gap to one shot until the 18th. His final score was 4-under 67, which moves him up in the world ranking as well. He'll be ranked at #47 now, giving him a chance to play in the Masters.
Even though he was only the runner-up in this tournament, he raised his arms and flexed his muscles when he found out about the raise in the world rankings. He can improve that or let the numbers slip as soon as next week, when he competes at Bay Hill. Choi admits that he's surpassed his own expectations and will try hard next week to at least maintain the new ranking.
Bubba Watson came in on the leaderboard in third place, down by only 2 shots. He managed to play bogey-free until the 15th hole, but achieved par from then on out to finish at 68. Watson has never won on the PGA Tour. Nick Watney placed 4th with a 67, and Retief Goosen, the winner here last year, came in 5th place with a 71.
Sunday marked the first interview questions Tiger would answer in the months since the shocking news broke about his early morning accident outside his home, followed by the claims that he'd been cheating on his wife repeatedly for an extended period of time. All eyes in the sports world were on the Woods broadcast on Sunday. The interview was broadcast at least on ESPN and snippets made it to all major news outlets, effectively stealing the spotlight from any other sports news on Sunday. But Furyk didn't let that bother him, saying that it didn't matter how big the announcement of his win might be in tomorrow's paper-- it would still be there.
