Furyk Wins the Verizon Heritage

The Verizon Heritage title in Hilton Head came down to two men, and was won by Jim Furyk in an interesting twist on the game. They were tied at 72 holes, and had just begun with their playoff hole. Furyk won with the first hole, before he even hit the ball.

Davis was on his way to his very first PGA Tour win and had he legitimately beat Furyk on this last hole, he’d have claimed that victory. He managed to birdie the 72nd hole in the tournament to force the playoff, and had to know that his chances of winning were there. And that’s when his balled rolled into some rocks after rolling off the green completely. As he tried to chip the ball out, his wedge brushed a few weeds on his backstroke. First, that he even noticed it is amazing. But that he then called officials over and explained what had happened, essentially offering himself up for a 2-stroke penalty, is even more unusual.

Davis said he saw the movement, or thought he saw it, out of his peripheral vision and was very disappointed. By calling that penalty on himself, he essentially handed the title to Furyk, and conceded the victory before Furyk even began playing his final hole. This marks Furyk’s 15th win on the PGA Tour, and his second win in the last month-and-a-half. He finished the tournament at 13-under 271 with a 69.

Davis actually almost won the tournament in regulation play. He had a one-shot lead over 6th-ranked Furyk until the last 4 holes. He bogeyed on 15 and 16 and dropped behind Furyk. Furyk actually started the day in the lead, but then missed a par put on hole 10 to end up tied with Davis. Then on the 12th hole Furyk birdied to put himself back in the lead. Then Davis birdied on hole 13 while Furyk missed the putt. Davis took the lead on 14, but they tied again on 15 and remained so through to the end of the regulation play.

Davis has finished in the number 2 spot 4 total times since he joined the PGA in 2004. If he’d not called the penalty on himself, he could have very well had his first victory. With no one else seeing his club touch weeds, it seems doubtful he’d have been challenged on it. But with cameras recording everything, there’s no guarantee that someone wouldn’t have spotted it and challenged the victory later.

Still, it may prove that golf still is a gentleman’s game because it’s rare that a player will point out such a thing, especially when he knows that will cost him a hard-fought title.  Former victor here Aaron Baddeley had a shot at the win as he was tied with Furyk early in the day, but tripled bogeyed on 7 and 8 and put himself out of the running. It came down to Furyk and Davis as early as the 10th hole.

Third place was a tie between Luke Donald and Bo Van Pelt, shooting at 70 and 69, respectively. Rounding out fourth place was Camilo Villegas with 70.
