Troy Matteson messed up a chance at winning the Frys.com Open in regulation play by bogeying the last 2 holes.
Playing the same 18 holes in reverse Matteson recovered from his foibles in a three way playoff. He also got a birdie on the second hole to beat Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark on Sunday at the Grayhawk Golf Club making this his second PGA TOUR victory.
A three players managed to par the first hole, Matteson managed to pull ahead at the 17th hole by getting his approach within 3 feet of the pin. With shadows mounting at days end, he nailed the putt to win.
Matteson said that he simply could not believe that things ended up the way that they did. He managed to win a total purse amount of $900,000. He knew that he stumped a little going down the stretch, and yet he is still beside himself for getting as far as he managed to get. This managed to cap an incredible stretch of three days for Troy Matteson who is 29 years of age. After having shot a 2 over 72 this past Thursday, he believed that he may unfortunately be headed for that airport sooner rather than later, or at least before the weekend had even arrived.
And yet Troy Matteson managed to get 61s back to back during play on Friday and Saturday, which was a PGA Tour record for the lowest score in two consecutive rounds on the tour. Then he managed to take a lead of three strokes when he walked into the final round of the tournament, giving him much greater odds than he seemed to think possible at that point.
Troy Matteson said that this is as good as it is going to get for him. He says that this is it, and he does not really have to worry much about playing better - There is no better for him, this is as good as it gets.
The first victory that Troy Matteson ever claimed was while he was a rookie in the year 2006. He won the Frys.com Open tournament in Las Vegas, which is now known by another name, Justin Timberlake's Shriners Hospital for Children Open.
Lovemark and Fowler both, two gentlemen seeking PGA Tour Cards, each managed to walk away with $440,000 each. On his first extra hole, Lovemark managed to get a gift when he splashed his approach shot right into a lagoon, but then the ball bounced out and onto the green's slope. He managed to chip to just 3 feet from the hole, and he made the necessary putt to keep himself alive in the game.
Fowler has managed to earn a total of $553,700 so far this season, giving him a special temporary membership since this amount exceeds the money list's 150th spot last year. This is going to make it possible for him to skip the Q-school's first stage next week, making him exempt going into the final stage.
