In Clarksburg, Ontario, Roger Tambellini managed to shoot a 2 under 69 on Sunday, taking the win at the Nationwide Tour's Wayne Gretsky Classic by a total of four shots over his competitor, Blake Adams. Tambellini managed to finish a tournament record of 20 under at a total of 265, overcoming a disastrous double bogey during the six hole by claiming six marvelous birdies along the stretch of the final round on the beautiful Georgian Bay Club course. He managed to shoot a 69, and the 66 Craig Barlow shot left him in third place at a total of 15 under.
Tambellini is quoted as saying that things really came together for him this week, as he was interviewed following a standing ovation that he received from fans that were overlooking the competition along the 18th green. Tambellini knows that things really need to come together in this way for any championship to be won.
Following Roger Tambellini, Black Adams and Craig Barlow were D.J. Brigman at 65, Chris Anderson at 69 and Garth Mulroy at 73 who all tied at 14 below 271.
Tambellini managed to pocket his career best winnings with a $144,018 purse, and he jumped from 17th place to 3rd place in the money list accordingly. Only the top 25 at the end of the season are going to be able to earn PGA Tour cards for next year, 2010. Roger Tambellini is a former Southern Californian golfer, and he has followed each of his previous tournament wins with a full season on the PGA Tour including one in 2004 and another in 2006.
On his first four holes, Tambellini managed to net two birdies, but them he took a bogey on the fifth followed by a nasty double bogey on the sixth that took his strong lead and shrank it down to a single shot. He commented that the double bogey had a bad effect on him, derailing him mentally. He felt that it took him some time to get that feeling back that he experienced this last Thursday upon shooting 64.
After he managed to make four more birdies on the next nine holes, he felt like he had a comfortable enough lead. Off of the par-5 18th hole, he hit a 3-wood off the tea.
Gretzky himself managed to finish in second place in the Pro-Am along with Derek Gilliespie. Former speed skater Olympian Catriona Le May Doan along with Derek Lamley managed to win in a 42 under scorecard playoff. The first two rounds alternated between Raven Golf Club located at Lora Bay with a 7,106 yard total par of 72 and a 7,139 yard par of 71 course, Georgian Bay. The final two rounds were played at the Georgian Bay course.
