Although in Farmingdale, New York, the rain has been upsetting large portions of the PGA United States Open golf tournament, Ricky Barnes managed to shoot an even par 70 on Sunday, allowing him to maintain the lead that he has been carrying following three rounds this last weekend.
The weather in Long Island seemed to cooperate just long enough for the field to be open for the beginning of the tournament's fourth round in the latter half of the afternoon on Sunday. The rain may have delayed things a bit, and muddied up the course, but that has not discouraged eager players from hitting the links for the latter half of the PGA U.S. Open golf tournament. At the time, Barnes was sitting at just 8 under for the entire tournament, placing him ahead of Lucas Glover by a single shot and ahead of Phil Mickelson by a solid six strokes.
The tournament has been a real struggle for many of the players involved, including Ricky Barnes, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. The game is far from over, however, as there is still another day of play to go. The final round of this tournament is not slated to be completed until Monday.
Mickelson managed to shoot a score of 69 on Sunday, and he is going to have to find a way to get past both David Duval and Ross Fisher who were both tied at 5 strokes under for the tournament. Tiger Woods managed to shoot his way to 2 strokes under with a score of 68 on Sunday, which was the low score for the day, but for the sum of the tournament he is actually sitting at the back of the pack, which means that he is tied in 15th place at 1 stroke over par for the entire span of the tournament so far. Although Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are both more than capable of turning things around, Ricky Barnes is still perceived to be the tournament favorite.
Ricky Barnes, who originally began the tournament sitting at 519th place in the entire world, has had his toughest round yet after shooting a 67 followed by a 65 on the tournament's first two days. On the fourth hole, he managed to eagle a par 5, which somewhat seemed to offset five bogeys, which four times out of five managed to occur on the back nine. He has managed to carry a lead across most of the tournament so far, and appears to be a favorite for the final day of the tournament, which is slated for Monday, June 22, 2009.
Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson managed to have four different birdies and two different bogeys on those tricky final nine holes. Tiger Woods managed to play a steady round including a bogey which was on the 14th hole as well as three birdies, which were played on holes 3, 4 and then hole 17 as well.
