Dustin Johnson defended his title at the Pebble Beach National Pro-AM and became the first person to win consecutive titles there in 20 years. He has also become the first golfer since Tiger Woods to come to the PGA fresh out of a university and win a major tournament in each of his first 3 years. Johnson defeated former golf #1 David Duval with a birdie on the last hole and a finish at 270, with Duval tying for 2nd with JB Holmes, each one shot behind Johnson.
Johnson's win here last year was helped by the rains that cancelled the final round, with Johnson having the lead going into it. He was leading by 54 holes, and thanks to the rain cancellation that number stood as the final. This year there can be no talk about whether or not he'd have won if the final round had been played, because it took him all the way to the last hole to pull out the victory.
Johnson has some other impressive numbers behind his short career now. He's only one of 3 current players in their 20s who have won 3 PGA tournaments, joining Sean O'Hair and Adam Scott. And not only is he the first to win back-to-back titles at Pebble Beach in 20 years, he's one of only 6 who have ever done it, joining the ranks of golf greats like Jack Nicklaus.
Johnson hasn't gotten as much buzz in the press as other young golfers like O'Hair and Scott, but this win on the last hole at Pebble Beach should change that for him. He's a golfer known for hitting the ball a long way off the tee, but that certainly didn't hold him back during the last birdie shot, or any of the others. He finished 16-under par.
Other players in the tournament included Padraig Harrington of Ireland who trailed by 7 shots at the end, but at 16th place earned a spot in the Ryder Cup standings.
Steve Marino finished 4th with 13-under, while J.P. Hayes and Josh Teater tied with Paul Goydos, the player who seemed to be the one that would end up battling Johnson for the win, in 5th place. Tom Gillis and Phil Mickelson were in the #7 and #8 spots.
Paul Goydos was the player most were looking at going into the final round as the one who might defeat Johnson and prevent him from two consecutive wins. Goydos and Johnson were both 4 shots ahead going into the final round, but they both made some mistakes that let other players catch up, before Goydos fell back and ended up tied in 5th place. Duval, tied for 2nd place with Holmes, managed 6 birdies in 3-under 69.
Luke Donald was 3-under as he approached the 18th hole, but double-bogeyed and finished at 71 for the second day in a row. In possibly the most disappointing play of the tournament, Sergio Garcia from Spain managed to bogey 6 of his first 12 holes.
