Tiger Woods has just recently made it official: He is going to be playing in the 2009 Deutsche Bank Championship which is slated to be held at the TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts this upcoming week.
Of course, was this something we were really worried about? The truth is, there was not really a lot of concern that he wasn't going to show up. Still, the officials with the PGA Tour seem proud to be announcing that he is definitely going to be sighted in the Boston area during labor day weekend. The entire PGA tour seems plenty thrilled that Tiger is returning. Tiger has meant a lot to this particular championship over the past few years, and having him return to compete again has generated a great amount of buzz since he made the announcement recently.
70 time PGA tour winner and the current top ranked golf player in the world, Woods won the 2006 Deutsche Bank championship but he missed the 2008 championship as a result of knee surgery. The defending champion, Vijay Singh became the first two-time winner before going on to win a $10 million dollar purse at the 2008 FedEx Cup.
FedEx Cup leader, Tiger Woods, who finished within five shots of the top after the first Barclays round this last week is currently leading the FedEx Cup in points as he enters into the playoffs for the PGA Tour. The Barclays was the first event in the playoffs, followed up by the Deutsche Bank championship.
The FedEx Cup is a points competition that follows 37 weeks of golf.
The regular golf season consists of a total of 36 events spanning 33 weeks, beginning in January and stretching into the middle of August. The playoffs then begin in the latter half of August with the Barclays and run into the middle of September. The four events between August and September will determine the winner of the FedExCup.
The Deutsche Bank Championship is set to run between September 4 and September 7, with the final round scheduled on Monday to finish the PGA Tour. There are going to be week long festivities which are slated to feature a wide variety of different events, including a Military Appreciation Day, a Kids Day, plenty of practice rounds and a Championship Pro-Am for example. The primary charitable beneficiary for this tournament is the Tiger Woods Foundation which helps young people achieve their goals through scholarships, grants, a learning center and the Tiger Action Plan.
The Deutsche Bank Championship is also known for supporting a number of New England based charities including one known as the First Tee of Massachusetts.
