The latest tour stop at the Colonial Country Club proved to be an interesting tournament, with key players making both positive and negative moves in the field. Some of the key names playing at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial included Scott Verplank, Boo Weekly, Geoff Ogilvy, K.J. Choi, Kenny Perry, Mike Weir, Vijay Singh, Steve Stricker, Angel Cabrera, Ian Poulter, Rory Sabbatini, John Daly, Jim Furyk, and Phil Mickelson.
The first two rounds saw both excitement and disappointment. Phil Mickelson struggled in both rounds, shooting a 1-over 71 in the first round and a 3-over 73 in the second round. To put this into perspective of the first two rounds, the two leaders of the field shot a first round 7-under 63. Mickelson missed the cut, finishing a disappointing 113th place with a 144. Other players that missed the cut included Steve Elkington, David Duval, Y.E. Yang, Davis Love III, Stuart Appleby, Trevor Immelman, and Jim Furyk.
Ben Crane brought some excitement to the field, shooting a hole-in-one on the 13th hole during the second round of the tournament. The 63-year-old tournament had only seen 22 aces prior to Crane’s shot. This is the fourth consecutive year that the tournament has had a participant shoot a hole-in-one. Crane finished his second round with a 64.
The final round saw the incredible run of Zach Johnson. Shooting a 65 and 66 in the first two rounds, Johnson fired two consecutive 64’s to win the tournament with a 259. His 21-under performance was a new record for the tournament. Johnson’s name may be familiar; he was the Masters champion in 2007. Brian Davis fired a 68 in his final round to drop to second place. Ben Crane continued his charge, carrying the momentum from his hole-in-one to finish in 3rd place. Crane started the second round tied for 39th place.
Players Scott Verplank and Boo Weekley had good showings at the Colonial, with Verplank shooting a 16-under 264 and Weekley shooting a 14-under 266. Geoff Ogilvy was close behind with a 12-under 268. Verplank, Weekley, and Ogilvy finished in 5th, 7th, and 13th, respectively.
Vijay Singh continues to work on his game and his ranking, coming in at 33rd with a 9-under 271. Singh’s ranking continues to slip; he has fallen out of the top 50 for the first time in over 10 years during the last few weeks of play.
John Daly had an impressive showing, considering the last few years of his golfing career. Daly finished 66th with a 3-under 277. Daly shined in his first and final rounds, with a 66 and 67, respectively. Daly slipped in his third round, shooting a 75 that dropped him from contention.
But the tournament belonged to Johnson, who managed to master the course through multiple weather delays and relentless competition. Finishing 3 shots above second place, Johnson secured his victory and his spot in history with an impressive win.
