Crane Wins Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego

Ben Crane won by one stroke at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego at Torrey Pines over the weekend. During the tourney, Crane managed to sink two birdie putts that each stretched over 45 feet, and ended the day with a 30-inch par putt that gave him the victory over Brandt Snedeker, Michael Sim and Marc Leishman, the 3 players who tied for 2nd place. The victory at the Farmers Insurance Open was the 3rd career win for Crane, his first win since 2005, and the win that will send him to the Masters.

Crane's name was recently featured in golf news but not for playing or winning, but because quotes attributed to him appeared courtesy the gossip magazine "Life & Style." The quotes were about the Tiger Woods' scandal, but Crane came out in defense of himself stating that he hadn't even spoken to that magazine, so the quotes weren't his.

Crane came into the final round in San Diego trailing by 2 shots, but had a strong start with 3 birdies in the first 5 holes, including one of the 45+ feet putts on the third hole. The second 45+ putt came on the 11th hole and gave him a 3 shot lead. Players that should have challenged his lead and given him a run for his money seemed to drop back in the standings pretty quickly.

Phil Mickelson who should have been more of a threat only managed to spark a controversy in the golf world by playing this tournament with a club that's legal but is regarded as unfair by many other golfers, some of which were very vocal about it both to the golfer's association and the media. Mickelson played with a club which some players felt gave him an unfair advantage and showed poor sportsmanship.

Though square grooved clubs were banned on January 1st, this particular club is legal due to a loophole from a 20-year-old court ruling. Scott McCarron even went as far as calling Mickelson a "cheater" for using the PingEye2 wedge. Mickelson was 4 shots behind going into the final, then bogeyed his first 3 holes and was essentially out of the running within an hour, even using the controversial club.

He'd shot into the bunker, then had to hit from down slope and behind pine branches. Using the club that caused such a stir, he knocked the ball back onto the green, but it went over 30 feet past the cup, giving him a bogey. He missed a par putt of about 30 inches on hole 2, then overshot the green and went into the hazard for another bogey on hole 3, putting him a disastrous 7 shots behind.

Michael Sim, one of the players tied in 2nd place for the final, challenged Crane until the end. But his 15-foot birdie putt barely missed the 17th hole, grazing the cup. He missed the par putt, putting him behind. Both players had pars on the 18th hole. Snedeker, another 2nd place finisher, barely missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th giving him a 69, and Leishman finished with a 68, after shooting his ball into a bunker and the rough on the last hole. Crane finished the tournament at 13-under 275.
