Tim Clark won his first PGA title on Sunday, and a hefty $1.71 million prize purse, by winning the Players tournament at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Clark has long been regarded by golfing fans and experts as one of the best players competing today without a single title under his belt. They won't be able to say that anymore. This is the first and only win by Clark, who previously played and lost 204 tournaments in his career.
He ended with a 5-under 67 while managing the last 26 holes bogey-free. He even set a record on the Stadium Course by managing the biggest 36-hold comeback ever played there. He managed 4 birdies in a row on Sunday to pass up leaders Robert Allenby and Lee Westwood, and pumped his first when he sank par putts on 17 and 18 for the win. That put him with a 16-under 272 for the whole tournament.
Allenby was in a good position to end up the winner, but missed the 16th hole eagle-putt and ended up tied with Clark. His birdie putt on hole 17th went to the cup and then rolled back away from it, and he failed to make birdie on hole 18, putting him one stroke back from Clark.
Phil Mickelson, who recently won the Masters, could have ousted Tiger Woods as the number 1 player had he won in Florida, but he ended up far down the leaderboard tying for 17th place after an unimpressive opening. He bogeyed 3 of his first 6 holes, making it almost impossible to come back for a top spot, let alone a win. Lee Westwood had the lead after 54 holes, but just as he did at the Masters he lost his lead and after a double-bogey on the 17th because of a shot into the water hazard, he ended up finishing in 4th place, 4 strokes behind Clark.
As far as Tiger's performance, he was once again off his game and ended up withdrawing. Though he had not made much mention of it before now, Tiger claims that his neck has been bothering him and he fears he may have a bulging disc. He says that it started hurting before the Masters, and that he's played through it until now but he can't anymore.
This is the first time in his professional career that he's gone 2 weeks in a row without earning any money, after he failed to make the cut last week at Quail Hollow. When woods withdrew on the 7th hole on Sunday, he was already 10 shots behind the leader.
Woods says he'll have an MRI this week to find out what's going on with his neck, and even threw down a shoe while answering some reporter questions. Then he spent about 40 minutes in a physical therapy trailer before finally leaving the grounds. This is the first time Woods has withdrawn from a tournament since 2006 where he withdrew from the Nissan Open because of the flu.
