Choosing the Right Ball pt 2
May 24th, 2010 | Golf Ball Driver, golf balls
Continued from part 1:
3 - Now you are going to want to test the balls you like from the fringe of the green.
Try hitting some pitch shots and some chip shots, observing the results. Try to see which balls are hitting the green, and which ones check in comparison to which ones release. Then you should try to hit some sand shots and some putts, observing the performances that each ball offers you. Remember that it is not the performance of the ball in general, but rather the performance of the ball for YOUR playing style that matters here. The multi layer balls are generally going to feel softer, and will fly lower. Super soft balls on the other hand are going to roll further with less spin.
4 - Now you should be testing the balls from around 100 yards.
Find the 100 yard marker and test each ball to see how they check and release upon hitting the green. Once you are done here, you're going to want to test the balls from even further.
5 - The fifth step involves taking your balls out even further, reaching the 150-yard marker.
Hit the balls from here and observe the results that you receive. You should be using the same exact criteria in order to evaluate each of the balls that you hit. Which balls feel most comfortable to you at this point?
6 - Finally, you are going to want to test each of the balls from the tee.
Hit the balls with a driver from the tee box. You should be looking for drives that are reaching their highest point or their apex rather quickly, leveling out and carrying out far down the range. What you do NOT want to see is drives that are beginning low and then shooting up later on. Shots like these are going to indicate that the driver created too much spin for the ball, and this is going to result in a much shorter drive and a much greater chance of slicing or hooking.
You cannot necessarily do all of this testing on any golf course. If you need to, just visit your local practice area or driving range to test out the balls. Once all six of these steps have been completed, you should feel much more comfortable choosing the right golf ball for your needs. You should be basing your decision on the combination of performance qualities that is the most meaningful to you. You are looking for a golf ball that improves your play, after all, not just the best over all ball in the bunch. A golf ball is going to impact your game nearly as much as your golf clubs do, meaning that you need to be willing to put time and effort into choosing the right balls for your game. It may take sacrifice to find the perfect ball, but the goal is to improve your game, impacting it positively, rather than hurting your game by choosing the prettiest brand name ball that isn't doing anything for you.
