At the club level, a great amount of emphasis is placed on how important it is for you to build a sound swing in golf, but this is a goal that, while very worthwhile, is often unfortunately sought at the expense of the rest of your game, the short game included. This certainly is not the case when it comes to the highest level of golf, however. For example, a pro player is probably going to devote just as much time to his short game as his full swing. Close to the green you will find an area where essential qualities are imagination as well as versatility. First and foremost, however, you are going to need to understand the techniques that are necessary in this process. Then, through hard work and practice, you can set about the process of developing your own unique feel for the all important shots around the course's green.
Let's look at the very precise art of chipping in golf.
The Standard Chip
It is very important for you to understand, as well as to master, the standard chip shot before you ever even think about playing the more fancy types of shots all around the green. Once you have accomplished this, you will discover that the exact same techniques can also be applied to a number of other types of clubs, creating a completely new repertoire of shots that you can fully utilize in order to suit a wide variety of different golfing situations.
1 - As is the case with absolutely every golf shot that you make, the most vital factor to consider at the ready is your address position. You should be adopting an open stance and your feet should be fairly close together. Let your weight favor your left side. A useful concept for you to remember is to have the ball back, the hands forward and the right forward.
2 - Now, while keeping your weight exactly in the place where it is, you are going to want to make a really compact backswing.
3 - Now your wrist break should be fairly minimal. You should have just a slight hinging or a slight setting of your wrists during the completion of the backswing. What this is going to do is effectively keep your hands in charge as well as in an ideal position that will allow you to lead the club head right down into the ball for the best results.
4 - At the impact, feel the ball compress between the turf and the clubface. This sensation of squeezing the ball forward is going to produce the necessary level of backspin.
5 - Your hands should always stay ahead of the club head, even through the impact. This technique is a very versatile one and thus it can be used with 7 irons, 9 irons and even sand wedges.
