Cherry Island Golf Course, Elverta, CA

Website: http://www.empiregolf.com/empire/cherryisland

Course History:

Robert Muir Graves, one of the most celebrated course archtitects today designed this course in 1990. It has become an area favorite with most golfers and offers just the right level of challenging play for golfers of all skill levels. The course is lush and scenic and is a great place to relax and get away from it all. It is tucked away, so we included directions on how to get to the course below.

What You Need to Know:

This is truly a full service golf course with a great grill, pro shop and lessons. The practice facility is terrific and offers numerous opportunities to improve on your game. This is a public course but we still recommend wearing appropriate golf attire.

You can register your tee time by calling the number above, but you may want to check out their website as they post frequent specials to save on their already reasonable green fees.

Playing Hints:

Water hazards are plentiful here and there are a few that are quite tricky. The first hole is clear of these but the sharp dog leg will definitely test your skills. The third, fourth, sixth and seventh holes all feature large lakes, so you'll want to try to be as accurate as possible on your tee shots.

The thirteenth hole is bisected by a creek, so you'll need to watch your tee shot here. Some players may prefer to hit it short and then iron over the creek to be on the safe side. The eighteenth hole is no gimme and meanders along with plenty of rough patches to keep you guessing. This one will take some time to master, but you should be able to birdie it with practice. This is a long course so we really recommend making use of a cart unless you are in tip top shape.

Mountain Springs Golf Course, Sonora, CA

Website: http://www.mountainspringsgolf.com

Course History:

The renowned course designer Robert Muir Graves put together this championship level public course. Tucked into gold country and near the Sierra Nevadas, this incredible scenic course is every relaxing to play. The course first opened in 1994 and become an instant hit. Due to its popularity, we do recommend reserving your tee time well in advance. You can get a sneak peak of the course thanks to their live webcam.

What You Need to Know:

There is a dress code here for men, who must wear collared shirts. We also recommend proper slacks. The course does not specify any restrictions for women, but proper golf attire is the safest bet. You can register your tee time up to two weeks in advance by calling the pro-shop. While you cannot bring your own ice chest on the course, you can get one from the restaurant.

Please be advised that all players must have their own set of clubs. If you don't have yours, you can rent a set. We've included their rates for this option below. The pro shop is incredibly well stocked and lessons are available at very good rates. The restaurant is a great place to unwind and overall, this is a very nice course.

Playing Hints:

This is a championship level course, but it is not terribly daunting for a novice player. Pros will find it just challenging enough and it will take a few passes to get it down.

The first hole is a dogleg left and you'll want to keep to the right if you want to get a good score on this one. Don't go too far right though, the water hazard on this hole runs the entire length of the fairway. The third hole is incredibly challenging and will require a bit of skill to master. It's another dogleg, and you're going to want to keep to the right to avoid the bunkers at the curve.

There's no letting up on this course. The fourth hole is surrounded by two water hazards and bisected by a creek. We recommend a short shot off the tee, followed by an iron to get over the creek. From there, you'll have a straight shot. The eleventh hole is another severe dogleg. Go a little left to get to the center of the fairway so you'll have a clear shot to the green. The fourteenth hole is a real killer with a small dogleg left, then a dogleg right, followed by a green surrounded by water hazards. Take a short shot to layup your second one, and then use a three or five wood to go a little to the right to avoid the lake. From there, you can iron into the green.

Course History:

This is a sister course to the Diamond Oaks golf course located in the same city. Robert Muir Graves also designed this one and it first opened for business in 1995. It's a little more difficult that Diamond Oaks and pros tend to prefer this course since it is a bit more challenging. That being said, the course is still friendly for players of all skill levels and novices should not have too much difficulty keeping up.

What You Need to Know:

You can register your tee time using their online registration system or by calling the number we have listed above. This is a popular course in the area since it is quite economical, so you may want to reserve your tee time by at least two weeks in advance. Check their website for more information on specials and on their passes which can make it even cheaper to play here.

Although this is a municipal course we still recommend using soft spikes and wearing appropriate golf attire. Denim is usually frowned upon as are cutoffs and tank tops. It's best to wear a collared shirt and slacks just in case.

The course is set in a native wetland so it can be a bit challenging at times. However, after your round you can rest up in the terrific clubhouse or see what the well stocked pro shop has to offer. For the money, this is definitely one of the best courses in the bay area.

Playing Hints:

This is a championship level course so you're going to want to bring your best game with you. There are numerous water hazards and bunkers on nearly every hole so accuracy is truly key.

The first hole has a sharp dog leg, but you're really going to want to pay attention by the time you reach the fifth, eighth and ninth holes on this course. They all have some hefty lakes and the wrong shot can end up ruining your score. The ninth hole is truly a monster that dog legs left and then right. You'll want to hit this one off the tee a little to the left so that you have a clear line of sight to the green. The green on the eighteenth hole is surrounded by bunkers and a water hazard but with practice you can easily master this one and even get a birdie.

La Purisima Golf Course, Lompoc, CA

La Purisima Golf Course is located in: Lompoc, CA

Phone: (805) 735-8395

Website: http://www.lapurisimagolf.com

Course History:

This is an amazing course designed by the famous Robert Muir Graves. Stretched out over more than 300 acres, this is a challenging course that pros will love, but novices shouldn't feel too overwhelmed. The course is located about 30 miles from Santa Barbara and since it opened in 1986, it has been incredibly popular with both the locals and travelers. The local hotels offer many different stay and play packages, and given the fact that the course is so well appointed, the fees are actually very reasonable.

What You Need to Know:

You can book your tee time by calling the number listed above, or by visiting their website. If you will be staying in the area, we highly recommend checking out their discount page for special rates at local hotels as well as reduced prices on your green fees. Since this is an upscale course, traditional golf attire is recommended, and denim is of course, strictly prohibited.

Only one course in California has been ranked higher than La Purisima by the readers of Golf Digest and that is Pebble Beach. That speaks volumes for the quality of this course, not only with the level of play, but also the practice facilities, the pro shop and the bar and grill. This is a very relaxing place to go, and the course offers just the right amount of challenging play for pros and novices alike.

Playing Hints:

You'll be dealing with a variety of hazards, including lakes and bunkers, and the design of this course is pretty challenging. Each hole features slopes that will test your skills and there are some terrific dog legs that will definitely give your game a workout. We recommend spending a little time in the practice facility before you head out on the links.

The key to this course is accuracy and knowing when to really power your tee shot and when to hold back a little. This is not a course that can be mastered after one round, but it sure is fun trying to get there. Overall, our best recommendation is simply to go with the flow on your first round, and make sure you stay long enough to play at least two. This will give you the best experience that the course has to offer, and you'll be able to get that practice round out of the way right off the bat.

Course History:

This championship course was designed by the celebrated Robert Muir Groves and is incredibly challenging and yet fun to play. Since the course opened in 1995 it became an instant hit and is the frequent site of tournaments throughout the year.

What You Need to Know:

This is really a full service golf course with a terrific grill, well stocked pro shop and great practice facilities. You can work on your drives well into the night thanks to their lit practice area and the prices are very reasonable. You can book a tee time online and they frequently post specials on their website. We recommend this option for even greater savings over their already low prices.

The course does not have a strict dress code, and proper shorts are allowed. We do however recommend a collared shirt and slacks unless the temperatures are really high.

Playing Hints:

The water hazards here are so tough you should probably know how to swim before starting your round. All kidding aside, this is a challenging course, but is possible to master. You may need a few rounds to get some of these holes down, but overall, it's a lot of fun to try.

The first hole has a nice dogleg so you'll want to go left first to get a clear shot to the green. The second hole is where you'll get your first introduction to the water hazards. The green is surrounded by a small lake, so it's best to take a short first shot and then iron on to the green from there. The third hole has a lake in the middle of the fairway. It's easy to end up smack in the middle unless you have a really long drive.

The fifth hole is possibly the most challenging one on the course. We recommend a short drive off the tee to avoid the water hazard. Then a short iron to get over staying a little to left. From there, you'll be faced with a dogleg to the right, and another water hazard by the green. Play this one safe to avoid ruining your score.

The back nine aren't much easier and the 18th hole can be a real killer. Watch out for the lake to the right of the green!

Mountain Springs Golf Course, Sonora, CA

Mountain Springs Golf Course is located in Sonora, CA

Phone: (209) 532-1000

Website: http://www.mountainspringsgolf.com

Course History:

This is one of the prettiest golf courses we've ever seen in this area, and it's easy to see why it has become such a local favorite. Robert Muir Graves designed the course, which opened in 1990. Although it is still relatively new, it has that old fashioned links feel and you'll be able to enjoy a challenging round of golf during your stay.

What You Need to Know:

There are several stay and play packages available in this area that will reduce the already low green fees even further. You can register your tee time by calling the number listed above. During peak visitor seasons, it may be difficult to get your time, especially if you don't call far enough in advance.

There is a dress code on this course, and they are pretty traditional. Men are advised to wear collared shirts and the course management asks that only two riders per cart be allowed. While they do not allow players to bring their own ice chests, you can get one at the course. In addition, all players must have their own golf clubs. Rentals are available at reasonable rates if you don't have your own set.

Overall, we found this to be a great golf course that had just the right amount of challenging play.

Playing Hints:

The fourth hole is quite tricky on this course, since you will be going uphill from the tee. We recommend putting as much power as you can into your tee shot to get through this hole. You'll also be dealing with a hidden bunker right to the left of the green, so go a little to the right on your approach shot.

The twelfth hole features a very tricky two tier green and will require a lot of patience and a good deal of skill to master. This is only a par three, but it can be difficult to get to the pin, especially if it is on the top tier. The fifteenth hole is especially tricky with an uphill lie and a dogleg to the left. Hit it hard and go a little to the right for the best layup. You'll need to hit about 230 yards to make it to the top of the hill. Once you're there, you'll have a clear view of the green, but it's not easy to get there.

Green Fees:

Monday - Thursday Friday Weekends and Holidays

18 Holes $27.00 $32.00 $40.00

Twilight $16.00 $19.00 $22.00

It is definitely one of the nicest and most professional courses in California and the surrounding areas.

What You Need to Know:

You can reserve your tee time by calling the number listed above or by using their online system. The course frequently runs specials, so we highly recommend visiting their website before you book. Lessons are available from the on site pros and the pro shop is very well stocked.

We recommend wearing traditional golf attire, although the course doesn't state that there is a dress code. If you have any questions we recommend contacting the pro shop. Since it is a resort course, you'll probably want to err on the side of caution and dress conservatively.

Playing Hints:

As we mentioned earlier, this is a challenging course, and you'll need to bring your best game. The main issue are the water hazards which affect pretty much every hole. You'll be dealing with a creek throughout the entire course, and there are also some sizable lakes that make several holes a lot more interesting.

While most of the holes are straightforward, there are a few with a slight dog leg. You'll need to focus more on avoiding the water and going for a long, straight drive. The bunkers aren't terribly bad but there are enough of them to make it challenging.

The greens for the second and third hole are cut off by the creek, so you'll want to make sure that you land your drive in a spot where it will be easy to get across with one shot. The same creek also affects the fifteenth and eleventh holes, so you'll be pretty familiar with the creek before the end of your game.

The first green is situated directly next to a large lake, so you'll want to keep to the right of the fairway for the best chances of avoiding it. On the thirteenth hole however, keep to the left to avoid the lake before the green.

How to Tackle a Course You’ve Never Played

Walking on to a course you have never played can be a little intimidating, especially if you are alone. You may not feel like chatting up the other players to get some tips and some course’s score cards leave a lot to be desired. However, there are some great ways that you can minimize the amount of stress that comes naturally with playing a golf course for the first time.

1. Study the scorecard.

Again, this may not be much help, depending on the pictures that are provided. Some give just numbers, while others will give you a rough idea of what to expect. Take some time to carefully look at the card and start to formulate your strategy.

2. Learn about the course before you go.

Some courses are known for their water hazards, others for their bunkers. Take the time to learn all that you can about the course before you get there. In many cases, you may even be able to find a walk through of the course online, and this can be incredibly helpful. Now, many courses are also adding video tours, so in the future, it should be a lot easier to go to a brand new course and know what to expect.

3. Learn about course designers.

Most of the courses in California were designed by the big three, Bell, Trent-Jones and Muir Graves. Each one has their own signature style. It really pays to learn a little about the courses they have designed in the past. Then, when you arrive at the course, find out how designed it. This should give you some important clues as to what you’ll need to know about playing it.

4. Try to get in two rounds.

It is very helpful to go for a first round that really doesn’t matter, and then play the second one when you are more informed. However, this may not always be possible, depending on your schedule and the amount of the green fees. If you can do this however, it’s the easiest way to get a good feel for the course.

5. Ask around the pro shop/club house.

One of the absolute easiest ways to learn more about the course you are on is simply by asking other players and the people that work in the pro shop. Remember, golf is a social sport and this is a great way to make new friends. Don’t be shy, they were once in the exact same position you were in.

6. When in doubt, work on accuracy.

Most courses can be surmounted simply by paying attention to accuracy. Do your best to get a good tee shot that is straight down the line and everything else should fall into place. It may not serve you well on doglegs, but overall, hanging to the center of the fairway and hitting it hard is generally the best approach on a foreign course.

Finding new golf courses should be fun – and you never know what great experiences are waiting for you unless you try!

Course History:

This is a terrific course located on the Riverhouse Resort that is open to the public and offers some very great rates. It was designed by the famous Robert Muir Graves and offers a championship level of play at executive course rates. It has been named by Golf Digest as one of their best places to play and it is easy to see why.

What You Need to Know:

Since this is a resort course we recommend traditional golf attire. You can register your tee time by calling the number above. During the summer months, the course is quite busy, so it is important to get your slot reserved. The course is open all year round and is a great place for a winter round of golf.

The pro shop is very well stocked and the practice facilities are world class. This is one of our favorite courses in the Bend area, and if you are planning a trip up this way, we highly recommend stopping by for a quick round.

Playing Hints:

Accuracy is key on this course, as it is with an course designed by Graves. The fifth hole is one of the most challenging and you'll need to hit a very long drive to be able to line up your approach to the green, which is hidden behind a very sharp dog leg.

Water hazards make this course all the more interesting and the rough here is definitely rough. You'll really want to work on your long drives as well as improving your short game. This is a course that will require every club in your bag, but you'll have a lot of fun trying to master it.
