Course History:
This course was designed by Ted Robinson and you'll easily feel as though you've been transported into paradise the minute you arrive. By far, one of the most visually stunning golf courses we have ever seen. The course is semi-private, but the public is allowed to play at certain times. We highly recommend making the trip to this course, since there are few courses like this that are available in the United States.
What You Need to Know:
This course has a pretty strict dress code, so please stick with traditional attire. They will enforce it, and appreciate the public's adherence to the rules. Tee times can be reserved online, or by calling the number listed above. We found the staff to be very helpful and you can even get a glimpse of the great pro shop online before you get there. The grill is definitely worth the trip and had far above average food.
Playing Hints:
This is course is all about the challenge and you'll find some of the holes may be a bit difficult, but still very fun. The fairways are rolling and the bunkers are certainly deep. Water hazards are not plentiful here, but you'll have plenty on your hands without them.
Our favorite hole was the eleventh and it is a doozy. Out of all of the few water hazards on the course, this is the most difficult. You'll be hopping in between small patches of fairway while you try to avoid the lake. Stick to the left on this hole and try to be as accurate as possible. If you are a good driver, aim right for the hole across the lake so you can bypass all of these little steps.

December 14th, 2008 — CA, Madera, golf courses, private course, restaurant
Riverbend Golf Club is located in Madera, CA
Phone: 559-432-3020
Website: http://www.riverbendgolf.com
Course History:
This is a private course that offers daily fee play and is a favorite among locals and travelers alike. Each year, the following events are hosted here: NCGA California State Amateur Qualifying Events, California Players Tour, Golf Channel Amatuer Tour, the Annual Outlaw Cup Championship (formerly Coombs Cup) and is the Home of the Save Mart Shootout. It is easy to see why this is such a popular destination. This is truly one of the nicest courses on the West Coast.
What You Need to Know:
You can register your tee time by calling the number listed above. Since this is a private course, traditional golf attire is necessary. No sleeveless shirts are allowed and no denim. The course does not state whether they prefer soft or metal spikes, but we recommend soft spikes just in case.
This course offers a very unique system called the ProShot Golf System. This gizmo is well worth the time it takes to get to this course. You'll be able to use this to get exact information on the distance of your shots as well as customized tips to help you improve your game. The system is mounted on to your golf cart and can be used to determine how many yards you are from the hole, how to handle upcoming hazards and functions very much like a high tech caddy.
The onsite café offers breakfast and lunch and features a great mix of real ranch cooking. They also provide catering services and are well loved by the entire community.
Playing Hints:
Don't let the virtual caddy fool you into think this is an easy course. It's actually quite difficult in spots but always fun to play. You'll need that system for many of these holes since they can be pretty tough. The first three holes may lull you into a sense of complacency, but the fourth hole will shake you up. The green is almost completely surrounded by a lake and you'll really need to have an accurate shot to get it. We recommend a short second shot from the tee to get into a better position to land on the green.
The seventh hole features a dogleg with a lake tucked into the curve and around the green. You'll want to stay to the right on this hole to have a clear shot to the green and to avoid the water. The 18th hole is a behemoth that can either save your score or ruin it. Work on an accurate tee shot to avoid the rough and try to stick to the middle of the fairway for the best chance at making par or a birdie.

Azusa Greens Golf Course is located in: Azusa, CA

Course History:
This is a semi private course, but the public is allowed to play. We found that the rates were incredibly reasonable given this fact and the facilities are what you would expect from a higher priced country club. Everything is very well maintained and overall, we found this to be a great course to visit.
What You Need to Know:
The course is tucked away near Los Angeles, and they’ve made marvelous use out of the 6200 yard area that is set aside for play. The mountains behind the course provide a magnificent backdrop while you’re playing and the gently rolling fairways make your round a lot more fun. This is a middle of the road course that is suitable both for novice players and professionals.
Please note that there is a spectator fee of $12 for anyone that is on the course without clubs. We loved the fact that they threw the cost of the cart in with the already low green fees, and that you really do get quite a lot for your money here. You can reserve your tee time by calling the number listed above, or you can book your time online. They frequently give away free rounds of golf and you can also take advantage of other specials by visiting their website.
The practice area is definitely top notch and they have a driving range, practice green as well as a chipping area. Even though this course is located in southern California, we were surprised by just how green everything was and how well maintained the practice areas were. A lot of courses don’t go to this trouble and it was very nice to see.
The grill has some great food and the clubhouse is what you would expect from a country club – sumptuously appointed and very comfortable. The course is open all year round and thanks to the weather in this area, you could conceivably play any time you want.
Playing Hints:
Make sure you allow plenty of time to play this course, since it is a long one. The average player takes about four and a half hours to complete a round here, but you may end up going a little longer if you are just starting out. That’s with a cart to give you a better idea of how long the course is.
The fairways here are incredibly narrow so accuracy is definitely key. You won’t have to deal with many water hazards, but they don’t cut you any slack when it comes to bunkers. Most of the greens are well protected by cavernous bunkers, so take extra care with your approach shots. The greens undulate as well, so your putting game will be the key to getting a good score here.
