Wie Slips But Appears to be in Good Shape

Co leaders in the second round, Shiho Oyama and Michelle Wie watched from the sidelines at the 18th fairway on Friday as Mollie Fankhauser rolled a two foot putt in to give her a lead in the third round of the LPGA Tour's Final Qualifying Tournament. After she carded a 6 under 66 at the Legends Course with the LPGA International tour, Mollie Fankhauser came out of Friday with a total of 12 under 204, putting her a stroke ahead of Shiho Oyama and two strokes ahead of both Stacy Lewis and Michelle Wie. Fankhauser was particularly happy about the event, because she was able to go out and play some of her best golf against some of the most up and coming, greatest players out there.

In the final threesome to get under way from the Legends course's first tee on Friday, Oyama who played 1 under 71 and Wie with an even 72 both battled one another for the lead throughout a large portion of the round. Lewis chased a golf groove that never seemed to appear while onlookers continued to press the group. According to Lewis, who had twelve straight pars before she finished with a 71 and a birdie, it was a little crazy out there. She said that it was difficult to get used to because as soon as you hit your tee shot you needed to run in order to get ahead of the gallery.

Wie became the first of three to fall behind, having hit a double bogey 7 on the par 5 second hole, though she is not talking to media much until after the final round of the tournament on Sunday. This native of Honolulu quickly erased her slip by hitting three consecutive one putt birdies, on the fourth hole, fifth hole and sixth hole. Wie had only made a single bogey in the first two rounds, then started her binge of birdies with a ten foot putt on the fourth hole, an approach to the inside 2 feet on the fifth hole and the a whopping 25 foot birdie on the sixth which is the putt that put her back into the lead during the tournament.

After six straight pars she was able to hook her tee shot on the thirteenth hole, making bogey when her ball ended up in a hazard. She managed to come back from that folly with a 12 foot birdie on the sixteenth hole, but on the seventeenth hole she failed to save par because of a bunker.

Oyama continued to ride her bright smile and her single stroke lead into the sixth hole which boasted a par of four, but a snap hook sent her tee shot into a water hazard. After she clawed her way to a double bogey six on that hole, she still seemed to be more than satisfied with her play on an overall basis. Regarded as the leading tour money winner for 2006 in the Japanese LPGA, Oyama seems satisfied with her play, and notes that she simply needs to remain focused to continue playing well.

Troy Matteson Takes Important Lead in Florida

Troy Matteson managed to open with an eagle, then went on to make three straight birdies at the turn before shooting a career low, which was nine under 63 before taking a one-shot lead for the first round of the Children's Miracle Network Classic, which was recently held at Lake Buena Vista in Florida.

Jimmy Walker, who really needs to see a victory of some kind in the PGA Tour's final leg of the tournament in order to avoid having to go back to Q-school managed to open with a 64, and was only one shot behind with Scott Verplank and Kevin Streelman. He has so far managed to be successful in preventing this from happening, but it is anyone's guess whether or not he will finish in good standing and avoid needing to return to Q-school in the following golf season.

Former PGA tournament champion Rich Beem needs to finish the tournament in the top five in order to avoid losing his card. He was among those at 65 strokes. If he loses his card during this current tournament, it will be the first time this has happened in ten years worth of tournament play.

The most notable round throughout this tournament however may have been the 70 which came from Erik Compton, who was playing on a sponsor's exemption. Compton, who is twenty eight years old, just recently received his second heart transplant about six months ago. He only recently advanced through the first stage of Q-school, and is trying to take things slowly as he recovers from what is an invasive and difficult surgery to go through. The PGA Tour granted Compton special circumstances, allowing him to use a golf cart during the tournament. Riding in a golf cart is not normally permitted during tournament play, and this is the first time that someone has been allowed to ride in a cart during a tour since Casey Martin, who was the player that lobbied for the special provisions when he was touring in the PGA Tour with a disability of his own. While the recent heart issues and surgery that Erik Compton has faced will certainly slow him down, it is admirable that he continues to further his golfing career. As long as he is allowed to ride in a cart during the tournament, there is no reason why he cannot continue to participate, assuming that he is willing to take things slowly.

Henrik Stenson managed to birdie on the No. 16 hole with a five foot putt, and then went on to hole a 20 foot birdie on the No. 18 hole, taking a seven-under 65, and a one stroke lead over a number of other players in the tour, including Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Anthony Kim and Adam Scot, all in the first found of the HSBC Championships which were held in Shanghai in China.

Golfer Anthony Kim is Disqualified for Using Broken Club in Shanghai Tournament

Anthony Kim is currently the World number 8 golfer. During his first tournament as a European Tour player, his hopes were recently dashed in Shanghai when he found himself being disqualified from the HSBC Championships this past Sunday.

Anthony Kim is a young player at only 23 years old, so he has not experienced a lot of heart break in his tournament play just yet. According to him, however, he damaged his driver on a sprinkler head while playing on the seventh fairway in the third round during what was a $5 million dollar event. Unfortunately, this caused him to fall foul of a rule that forbid the use of a club that was damaged in any other way than during the normal course of play during the tournament.

Kim was pretty shocked, and according to him he did not believe that he would be disqualified. Kim, however, does understand that the rules are rules, and he has admitted to having no problem with the fact that there was a rule that disqualified him from play.

"I hit the driver at the tee, and I was walking with it like I usually do." Kim was described as saying after the incident, "I wasn't angry or anything, just walking down the fairway. The toe hit the top of the sprinkler."

Because his club was damaged while he was walking down the fairway and not while striking a ball or otherwise engaging in the tournament play, he was disqualified for continuing to use the club. Kim had clearly gained no advantage over anyone else through the damage sustained to the club. He hit a triple-bogey eight after two errant drives, and then dropped another at the ninth. After parring the 10th hole, he received the disqualification ruling. According to the senior referee for the European Tour, Andy McFee, he was disqualified because he continued to use the driver two additional times on the eighth tee, and both times the ball continued to go right.

What did work in his favor was the fact that Kim was the one who concluded that damage had been done to the head of his driver, and he was also more than willing to alert officials to the fact immediately. Unfortunately, because of the rules for the tournament, he still had to be disqualified despite the fact that he was proactive in trying to solve the problem.

Kim joined the European Tour for the first season of what is being called the Race to Dubai. His disqualification is just one in a string of misfortunes that he has been experiencing in recent weeks. He recently fell down a set of stairs, and also look a blow on the job from a horse, leaving him limping from the fall and unable to eat solid food because of the injury to his jaw.

Donald Trump’s Design Approved

The Scottish government has decided to approve the plans designed by Donald Trump to take a wild stretch of the Aberdeenshire coastline in the north east part of Scotland, and transform it into a 2.4 billion dollar golf resort. Trump, a billionaire businessman that is world renowned and resides in New York, stated that he was “deeply honoured” by the Scottish government's decision, which was brought after a local planning inquiry. While the details are still being worked out, the resort will have a thousand homes and holiday apartments, and a 450 bedroom hotel along with two golf courses, which Trump is known for designing and developing.

The plans are to have the first golf swing hit in the spring of 2011, which is not long at all from now. The decision to back the project was welcomed by Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond, while the decision was made by Finance Secretary John Swinney. Salmond has insisted to his constituents that the project will create as many as 6000 jobs, 1400 of which will be permanent after the development has been completed, which is a boon for the tough economic climate that has been plaguing the world. The resort is also expected to bring to Aberdeenshire estimated 64 million pounds sterling every year.

However, the decision is wrought with quite a lot of controversy, as the land in question is an untouched piece of the natural habitat that belongs to Scotland. The decision was condemned by environmentalists, who state that the project is making a mockery of the Scottish National Party's green agenda. The project was also opposed by the former chairman of the planning committee, who had blocked the application the first time that it went around. The former chairman indicated that it is speculative that Trump would be the only person who could get permission for the development of such a vanity project, and that the project is poorly planned and holds no consideration for the environment. In essence, the decision can be considered as wanton vandalism.

The site of the course development is considered to be a site of special scientific interest. It is believed that there are ways to build the course without building upon the SSSI. The SSSI includes protected sand dunes, and there are dunes upon which Trump intends to build the greatest golf course he has developed so far. The billionaire has invited the actor Sean Connery to make the first golf swing, and promised to give him the membership number 007. The SSSI is also know as the Sands of Forvie, and the Forvie National Nature Reserve, with the fifth largest sand dune system in the entire UK, and it is also the home to the largest breeding colony of eider duck. It is marked a special protection area for wildlife conservation and this could be upset by the development in coming years.

Tiger Woods Targets Masters for Return

Tiger Woods has announced that he is feeling very confident that he is going to be competing in the Masters tournament in April 2009, even though he has not yet been given a date by his doctors regarding when he can begin playing again following a knee injury and subsequent surgeries.

Tiger Woods has said that if he takes six months off following his knee surgery that puts him into January. Another four months puts him into ten months worth of recovery. Tiger Woods feels confident that after ten months worth of recovery, he should have absolutely no trouble returning from his surgery in good form for the Masters Golf Tournament.

Generally speaking, American football players are more than able to return back to their game between six and nine months after an injury. Tiger Woods believes that if an American Football player can do it at that level and in that amount of time, then he should be able to do it in golf in ten months as well. However, Tiger is trying to balance his optimism with a good dose of caution as well, because his injury involves a ligament in his knee, and he has to be able to let it heal if he wants to get full capability back in his leg. Ligaments need to be able to become taut again, so if it's stretched out prematurely, Tiger could end up with the same injury issues he ended the 2008 season with. Keeping this ligament taut means that the world no. 1 golfer must stay on a straight plane rather than attempting any kind of rotation.

Woods has not been able to take a full swing since the United States Open at Torrey Pines in California in June. That was the same week that he managed to defeat Rocco Mediate on a play off play off, which allowed him to bag his 14th major tournament win. He had an operation during the following week, where a tendon was removed from his right knee in order to replace the damaged anterior cruciate ligament that he injured in his left leg. He appeared at Torrey Pines as a caddie for the Buick Sweepstake winner recently, and did not seem to have any problems with his leg or his knee when he stepped out of his cart to study the putt lines.

Tiger Woods injured his leg worse during his most recent tournament play, as his leg had already been bothering him. Following the tournament and the subsequent surgery, Woods had to make the decision to sit out the remainder of the tournament because he was no longer fit to continue playing. While original reports stated that he might be back as early as January or February, Woods is targeting April and the Masters tournament as an ideal time to begin his career anew.

Tiger Woods and Buick - Relationship in Trouble?

With the recent economic landscape, Tiger Woods and General Motors Corp. are participating in talks regarding the golfer's continued involvement in advertising the Buick past 2009. As a result of the failure of $15 billion in asset sales giving GM the safety net it wishes, GM is planning to proceed with a series of cost cuts. The endorsement deal was held with the golfer since 1999, and Buick has indicated that it does not wish to cut back on golf sponsorships. As a result of the economy, the company's stock dropped by three quarters, and GM has laid off 53,000 union workers.

The contract will expire in 2009, and there is discussion of whether it will make the most fiscal sense to renew the contract. Really, the talks are currently discussing the nature of the relationship between Woods and Buick, and talks directly relating to the possibility of renewal of the contract are not in the works. Buick has come out and said that there is no wish to sever ties with Tiger Woods, who carries a Buick logo upon his golf bag and appears in television and print ads.

For half a century, Buick had continued its involvement with golf and is the Official Car of the US PGA tour, through 2010. Buick is the largest sponsor of the PGA tour, and they have no plans on changing. But the recent problems on Wall Street have led experts to predict rough times ahead for the golf's top circuit. This is a problem that a lot of sponsors are facing, making sure that every dollar spent is utilized to its fullest. Many companies are looking for ways to save money. GM is planning to close down SUV assembly plants across the country because of the slowing of US sales of vehicles. At other plants, production will slow, affecting about 1500 workers.

Not even Tiger Woods is immune to the state of the economy, as advertising potential could dwindle. It is all about the viability of banks, making this a unique situation for the economic stability and viability within the job market as a whole. How much that Tiger Woods makes with Buick is confidential, but last year, Tiger made over 120 million dollars between golfing and commercial endorsements. Buick recognizes the need for advertising, and the value of pros like Tiger Woods in marketing brand names. The issue at hand is to ensure that advertising money is spent efficiently.

In the end, it will be likely that Tiger Woods and GM will continue their relationship without modification, although anything can happen. Advertising has always been and will always be a vital component of everything commercial, but what will likely happen is that money going into advertising will be cut back and more efficiently spent. For the golfing world, sponsors will start to cut back and it may make things tight for the PGA with tournaments and other sponsored events. Given the power behind professional golfers in advertising, corporate money will always be available; it is just the amount that will diminish.

Golf Pioneer Casey Martin Pulling for Erik Compton in Quest for Tour Card

Admirers of Erik Compton from Miami, Florida will be following from the furthest corners of golf today, as he is beginning his quest to win a PGA Tour card only five months after undergoing a heart transplant, which was his second attempt at a transplant to date. Compton, who is only twenty eight years old, is teeing it up at 9:50 am this morning in the first round of the first stage of the PGA Tour's Qualifying Tournament event, which is being held at Crandon Golf, a course on Key Biscayne in Florida.

Compton, along with former teen golfing sensation Ty Tryon are among a total of 78 golfing pros who are vying over a span of four different rounds to advance to a second stage, and then finally to the final state of the "Q School" during the fall season. The low 20 at Key Biscayne will be chosen to advance. According to officials with the PGA Tour, as many as the low 22 may move forward though it is not known yet.

Casey Martin, who is the men's golf coach at the University of Oregon is going to be following as best as he possibly can during the tour from his home, which is more than 3,000 miles away from where the tournament is being held. Martin's interest in Compton's game goes beyond mere curiosity. After all, Martin did pave the road for Compton to travel with a fight that went all the way to the Supreme Court just to get him there.

The PGA Tour finally did grant Compton a special request to use a golf cart during his Q-School bid, after he demonstrated that he does qualify for the Americans with Disabilities guidelines after his surgery. Compton only recently underwent his heart transplant surgery on May 20, six months after he miraculously survived a heart attack. Compton had received his first heart transplant at only twelve years old, and is now recovering from his second at the age of 28.

Martin suffers from a degenerative syndrome in his right leg, called Klippel-Trenauney-Weber Syndrome. He was originally denied the use of a golf court when he made his bid to win the PGA Tour card. He did ultimately win the right to use a golf cart when the Supreme Court finally ruled in his favor in 2001. In a phone interview from his home in Oregon, Martin said "I'm excited for Erik. I'm thrilled he gets the opportunity to pursue golf at the highest level."

Erik Compton does say that he feels ready. He shot a 7-under-par 65 and beat a fiel of local pros by six shots at the one day Biscayne Open tournament two weeks ago at Crandon Golf, the same course where the Key Biscayne tournament is being held right now. Compton said that he was firing on all of his cylinders because he is excited to be playing golf again. If Compton can in fact achieve his PGA Tour card team, then Martin will finally know that his fight for the use of golf carts during tournaments served an even greater purpose.

Seve Ballesteros to be Honored at Volvo Masters in Valderrama

The officials running the Volvo Masters at Valderrama two weeks from now are trying to come up with the best possible way to honor Spain's favorite son, Seve Ballesteros, during this event which marks the end of the golfing season. Ballesteros is awaiting the results of a biopsy done on a tumor in his brain, and this is inspiring golf officials to create a brief interlude at some point during the tournament days in order to honor the Spaniard who made a real name for himself over several decades of golfing. If they do not do something during the tournament, another possibility which has been mentioned is to create a Seve Ballesteros US University scholarship program for gifted young compatriots who want to combine golf with their education.

The latter of the two suggestions, while a touching gesture, is something that is sure to strike a chord with Ballesteros because of his own personal thoughts on mixing education with golf. When he announced that he would be retiring from the game of golf in 2007, he revealed that he had deep regret for giving up his teenage years to golf. He expressed wanting his own children to complete their educations, and recommended the same for other young golfers who wanted to go further in life.

Many who have tried to visit Seve Ballesteros over the past few days have been turned away, including Miguel Angel Jimenez. His brothers, who have been fiercely protective of him since he was diagnosed with his brain tumor, are keeping a close watch on him at all times. Jose Maria Olazabal, however, is one of only a handful of non family members who have been granted access to visit Ballesteros in the hospital. Olazabal partnered with Ballesteros in the Ryder Cup for a total of 11 ½ points out of a possible 15. Like Seve's family, Olazabal is calling for everyone to give Seve the space that he needs right now.

Jose Maria Olazabal was quoted as asking people to be patient, as well as to simply allow for things to happen in their own time while respecting Seve's privacy, according to his manager Sergio Gomez. He has also specifically asked that no one elaborate on Seve's condition until the results of the biopsy have been revealed. What Olazabal was willing to reveal, however, was that during his visit he and Seve had chatted about golf memories and life in general for at least a good hour. He also saw fit to mention that Seve had looked to be in the best of spirits and full of life, except for the natural worries about the tumor and the operation that would be necessary to remove it.

On October 15, it was announced that Seve Ballesteros had undergone a twelve hour operation to remove a sizable amount of the tumor from his brain. Ballesteros is in stable condition following the operation, in which there were no complications. It will be several days until the status of the tumor is known, and before a decision can be made regarding where to proceed from there.

Tiger Woods Expects to be an Even Better Golfer Upon His Re-debut in 2009

Anyone who was hoping that Tiger Woods would have lost a little bit of an edge while away from the golf course with a knee injury is apparently going to find themselves sorely disappointed. This is because the world number one golfer, Tiger Woods swears that he is going to be a better golfer than ever upon his return.

"I have been trying to make changes for years," He told reporters regarding his golf swing, "But I didn't have much in the knee." After holding a news conference in the lavish Hotel Bel-Air in Beverly Hills, he spoke about his comeback as well as his plans to unveil details about a golf course design for a course by the name of Punta Brava that would be situated along the shore line in Ensenada in Mexico. He has been working on this design, which is his third attempt at golf architecture, ever since he tore a ligament in his left knee and sustained stress fractures which were exacerbated during his playoff victory at June's San Diego United States Open tournament, which was what forced him out for the remainder of the season. He has planned to return sometime in early 2009 according to reports and interviews, though he is not expected to make a full 100 percent recovery until sometime around 2010.

Tiger Woods assures reporters that he does not plan on changing his attacking approach. His primary focus is not to do any more damage, but simply to get back into the game as soon as he can. He showed a lot of enthusiasm during recent interviews about the Ryder Cup last month, as well as his plans for his newest golf course, Punta Brava. Punta Brava is going to be an exciting project for him, involving the creation of a 6,853 yard, par 70 golf course layouts where you can see beaches and ocean from every single hole along the entire course, which is not something that you tend to see in many golf courses anywhere, let alone in beautiful Ensenada, Mexico. Punta Brava is slated to open either in late 2010 or in early 2011, and this may depend heavily on Woods' golf schedule at the time and whether or not he is still dealing with the ramifications of his injuries and the lengthened healing process that came with the exacerbation of his injuries in recent tournament play.

Tiger Woods may be out for a while longer, but he does not appear to plan on letting that get him down in any way. He is enjoying placing his focus on his newest architectural golf course in Ensenada, Mexico, and he is already gearing up to return to the green in as early as January of 2009, which does not give his competitors much time to improve their games if they expect to gain an edge over him during his absence.

Golf has been Gripping Recently, even without the Tiger

There is more golf to be played, but the major moments are over when it comes to the United States Tour and the Ryder Cup, both of which were wrapping up in September. The big surprise here is that the sport continued to remain compelling, even though Tiger Woods was not present. Tiger Woods called the season to an end after he won the United States open in June with a broken leg and a knee that was desperately in need of surgery. His performance there could possibly be the apogee of his high flying career, and was virtually untrumpable and potentially foolhardy, considering that he did additional damage to his injured leg by hobbling to victory throughout the United States Open.

For now it seems that Tiger Woods is not likely to slip back inside the ropes before March of next year at least, and he may not even make it back until the Masters kick off in April. There is no real precedent for the dominant golfer in the world being away for such a long period of time. His lengthy absence from the green has been noticed by sponsors and television ratings, but longer term interests of his game have not seen such negativity. His former and future challengers, for example, are taking advantage of some unexpected elbow room which is allowing them to build up some confidence, and their own profiles as well. Golf can suddenly see a particular attractive proposition, since Woods' absence is allowing other golfers a small chance to shine, and creating quite a bit of potential competition come his return in the spring of 2009.

Tiger Woods is known for providing an aggressive swing, which puts an enormous amount of torque on his left injury. Unfortunately, he has an anterior cruciate ligament which is why he has had to step back a bit. The healing process for an ACL injury is six months no matter what you do, meaning he is out until at least January. Because he cannot practice at all without rotating, and further injuring himself in the process, he is only going to be at about 85% strength by the time his ACL has recovered, meaning he will have further mending to do before he can show up on the green again.

The clearest beneficiary of this opportunity to play without Tiger was Padraig Harrington, who easily soared into the top three in the world, ranking just behind Mickelson and Woods in the final two major championship tournaments of 2008. Vijay Singh, the longtime elder rival of Woods was no real factor in the majors having missed the cut in the British Open as well as the PGA. Anthony Kim of the United States and Camilo Villegas of Columbia are also seizing this opportunity to do some damage in Woods' absence, finishing the season with numerous victories of their own.
