Course History:
French Camp RV Resort and Golf Course is a great little place located in Manteca, CA. If you're planning an RV trip or you just want to change up your game a bit, this is a great course to try. It's well suited for most players and novices should have a great chance at a really good store. Pros won't find it terribly challenging, but it does offer a fun game and the area is particularly beautiful. The staff are very helpful and the whole resort has much to offer. It's a great place to take the kids on your next vacation, or a great place just to get away for the weekend.
What You Need to Know:
This is a very laid back course, so you won't have to worry about the dress code so much. The fees are very reasonable and their site offers specials, so we recommend checking that often. You can reserve your tee times by calling the number listed above. One of the best parts about the whole resort was the shuttle service that will take you right from the course to the café - and it's worth the trip. They have a great mix of good old comfort food and once again, the prices are very low.
The pro shop was surprisingly well stocked and had much to offer, and you should definitely stop at the resort gift store for even more great items. Overall, we found that this was truly an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. We would have liked to have stayed longer, and next time we plan to take the dog since they offer special dog runs to keep them busy while you're off having fun. A great little course in a terrific location.
Playing Hints:
This course isn't terribly difficult, but it is a lot of fun to play. Our favorite hole was the sixth hole which looked like it was going to be very easy and turned out to be a bit more of a challenge than we thought it would be. There are a lot of par threes on this course, so we recommend working on your short game and chip shots before you get here. You'll have plenty of chances to test your skills and they do offer a little practice area before you head out on the links.

Tustin Ranch Golf Club is located in: Tustin, CA
Phone: 714/730-1611

Website: http://www.tustinranchgolf.com/
Course History:
This course was designed by Ted Robinson and you'll easily feel as though you've been transported into paradise the minute you arrive. By far, one of the most visually stunning golf courses we have ever seen. The course is semi-private, but the public is allowed to play at certain times. We highly recommend making the trip to this course, since there are few courses like this that are available in the United States.
What You Need to Know:
This course has a pretty strict dress code, so please stick with traditional attire. They will enforce it, and appreciate the public's adherence to the rules. Tee times can be reserved online, or by calling the number listed above. We found the staff to be very helpful and you can even get a glimpse of the great pro shop online before you get there. The grill is definitely worth the trip and had far above average food.
Playing Hints:
This is course is all about the challenge and you'll find some of the holes may be a bit difficult, but still very fun. The fairways are rolling and the bunkers are certainly deep. Water hazards are not plentiful here, but you'll have plenty on your hands without them.
Our favorite hole was the eleventh and it is a doozy. Out of all of the few water hazards on the course, this is the most difficult. You'll be hopping in between small patches of fairway while you try to avoid the lake. Stick to the left on this hole and try to be as accurate as possible. If you are a good driver, aim right for the hole across the lake so you can bypass all of these little steps.

Glen Annie Golf Course is located in Santa Barbara, CA
Phone: 805-968-6400

Website: http://www.glenanniegolf.com/main/index.php?name=Rates
Course History:
This is a truly stunning course that overlooks the channel islands and the bay. For those who enjoy a scenic course, it is hard to beat this one. The amenities here are absolutely some of the best in the area and this is considered to be one of the best and most challenging championship courses in this region. That said, although the course appeals to pros, novices should still be able to enjoy playing here. It may take a few times to master the course, but considering the view, it is well worth the time spent.
What You Need to Know:
By far, the club house at Glen Annie is one of the best ever built. Visitors come from miles around to enjoy it, even if they don't play golf. The structure has won numerous architectural awards and the inside is sumptuously furnished. You'll enjoy dining here after a tough round of golf or maybe stopping by just for fun.
The pro shop is completely stocked and offers gifts for all golfers. Many players like to take advantage of the patio after a round so they can relax and get a better view of their surroundings. This is one course that everyone should try to visit at least once in their lives.
This is a championship course and it is quite hilly, so we recommend taking advantage of the proffered cart. The course is currently running a special where you can get unlimited rounds of golf for a month, with a cart, for less than $300 a month and we highly recommend taking them up on this deal. For the money, this is a great deal.
Playing Hints:
While the course has only two water hazards and a few bunkers sprinkled around, it's the hills that make this a challenging round of play. There will be times when you won't even be able to see where you're aiming, but that is part of the fun of playing here.
Most of the holes are straightforward, but you will be dealing with a dogleg on holes four, ten, sixteen and fourteen. They are reasonably easy as long as you stick to the left on four and to the right on the others. You'll need to bring your top game for this one, as longer drivers will definitely have an advantage. A long drive off of most tees is essential as the rough is quite tough here and separates each fairway into well trimmed islands surrounded by a sea of grass.

The Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course is located in Lake Tahoe, CA
Phone: 888.881.8659
Website: http://www.edgewood-tahoe.com/
Course History:
This is a stunning course that first opened its doors in 1968, and has since gone on to receive numerous accolades and an ardent fan base. It was designed by George Fazio and contains a great mix of hazards and terrain that make it a challenging but fun course to play. The USGA holds several events here and the course also frequently hosts celebrity golfing events. The public is usually not allowed on the course to play, and we've noted below which dates are unavailable.
What You Need to Know:
You can book your tee time online or by phone and this is one of the few courses that will let you book six months in advance. Please note that singles cannot reserve a tee time but may play on standby notice. If you don't call to cancel your tee time, the course will charge you for the full amount, so make sure that if you can't make it that you do cancel with plenty of notice to avoid this.
This is a very nice course and we highly recommend wearing traditional golf attire. Their pro shop is literally one of the nicest throughout the area and you'll find plenty of gifts or things for yourself. The Golf Bar and Deck is incredible and well worth the trip out. The food is just about perfect. Overall, this is a course that has everything required for a memorable and fun golf outing.
Playing Hints:
As we mentioned above, this is a challenging course, but novices shouldn't feel too intimidated. The water hazards will require a bit of effort to surmount, but the key is definitely distance and accuracy. It's a good idea to perfect the long tee shot before going to this course to increase your chances of staying under par.
The terrain is certainly not level and there may be times that one wrong shot will put you where it's just about impossible to see the green. This is a challenging area for many players and requires a good iron game as well as being able to hit a long drive. The greens are fast and unpredictable, but this just makes it more fun. Chances are, you'll want to keep coming back to try to master this course.

Cherry Island Golf Course is located in: Elverta, CA
Phone: 916-991-7293

Website: http://www.empiregolf.com/empire/cherryisland
Course History:
Robert Muir Graves, one of the most celebrated course archtitects today designed this course in 1990. It has become an area favorite with most golfers and offers just the right level of challenging play for golfers of all skill levels. The course is lush and scenic and is a great place to relax and get away from it all. It is tucked away, so we included directions on how to get to the course below.
What You Need to Know:
This is truly a full service golf course with a great grill, pro shop and lessons. The practice facility is terrific and offers numerous opportunities to improve on your game. This is a public course but we still recommend wearing appropriate golf attire.
You can register your tee time by calling the number above, but you may want to check out their website as they post frequent specials to save on their already reasonable green fees.
Playing Hints:
Water hazards are plentiful here and there are a few that are quite tricky. The first hole is clear of these but the sharp dog leg will definitely test your skills. The third, fourth, sixth and seventh holes all feature large lakes, so you'll want to try to be as accurate as possible on your tee shots.
The thirteenth hole is bisected by a creek, so you'll need to watch your tee shot here. Some players may prefer to hit it short and then iron over the creek to be on the safe side. The eighteenth hole is no gimme and meanders along with plenty of rough patches to keep you guessing. This one will take some time to master, but you should be able to birdie it with practice. This is a long course so we really recommend making use of a cart unless you are in tip top shape.

January 1st, 2009 — Book Review, golf courses
One part travelogue, one part golf diary, the result is a book that is all fun. If you enjoy reading humorous accounts of both travel disasters and golfing nightmares, this is a definite must read. The author is a well known standup comedian and has the rare gift of being able to be truly funny in print. This is an amazingly quick read that will have you wishing Wood would take a second trip.
The author decided that he was going to sell everything he owned and head out on a golfing journey of mega proportions. He found the southern most golf course in the world, and the northernmost and resolved to visit 78 courses in between. His journey took him to every continent except Antarctica, but golf really isn't that big there anyway. The trip begins in South America as the author struggles to adapt to the high altitude in Chile.
From there he visits a few more courses before heading off to places like Nepal (they actually have two courses) Australia and even the Ukraine, where he was unfortunately escorted out of the country by armed guards. Each chapter is a funny diversion that immerses you in the scene - you'll literally feel like you're taking this incredible journey along with the author.
He does a great job of mixing in anecdotes about dealing with the local culture and struggling with languages to the actual playing of each course. It's completed by amazing pictures that really set the tone for the entire book. If you have always wanted to travel to golf courses around the world, but don't have that kind of cash, this is a mini vacation that will leave you feeling refreshed.
We found the humor to be honest and refreshing, but it was a little bit forced at times. That may be due to the fact that there really isn't all that funny material to come by when you're crammed into a coffin sized hotel room without the proper currency for the city you're in.
It's little things like these mishaps that endear the author to the reader and bring out the human side of the journey. There are many books dedicated to the courses of the world, but few provide this kind of humorous yet real look at what it takes to stay there and play there.
We appreciated the fact that the author didn't take the easy way out by visiting the most well known courses in the world. He looked for the out of the way courses that are inevitably more fun to play and in many cases, more stunning than their famous competitors.
This is a great book that belongs on any golfer's coffee table. Undoubtedly you'll want to read it again and again, especially during the off season when you're itching to get back on the links. A great read by a great author. Let's hope he does it again real soon.

January 1st, 2009 — Book Review, golf courses
Whether you are a die hard golfer, or just someone that likes to dream big, this is an incredible book. Inevitably, when you're dealing with a book that lists the "50 Best", you're going to have a lot of controversy. Instead of getting bent out of shape that perhaps your favorite courses weren't included, this is a book to be read for fun, not for critiquing. When you're done, take some inspiration from the book and make your own list of 50 courses that you must visit before you die - now that is a lot of fun.
The author is well known for his previous title on Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die
, and he is also a fanatical golfer. We liked the approach of asking several people, such as Donald Trump, where they would love to play golf. The result is a great list, but one that not a lot of golfers will be able to attain. For example, there are a few courses on the list that are simply too expensive for the average golfer, or shut to the public.
However, if you're just reading for fun, the book takes you on a fantastical journey literally around the world. You'll be seeing courses in the most exotic locations and the accompanying photographs are worth the cost of the book alone. This can serve not only as a dream book, but as a wonderful conversation piece among friends. Our main complaint was that pictures were not included for every single course in the book. That would have bumped the book up a lot further in our estimation, and it seems almost silly not to include at least one picture for every course.
That aside, this is a terrific book that belongs on every single golfer's coffee table, if for nothing else than the inspiration it can bring. The next time it's a rainy day and you can't get on the links, open this book and prepare to travel around the world in style. The overall style of the writing is well suited to a book of this type and it's all too easy to get swept away and wonder where the hours went.
As we mentioned previously, this type of book usually generates quite a bit of controversy, simply because everyone has a set idea of what the best courses are. However, this works in the book's favor and while there are those that might criticize it, this is an inspirational read that really made us love the game even more.
The one thing that would have made the book better is perhaps steering clear of being "safe" with some of the more well known courses. We would have liked to have seen more out of the way courses that are real diamonds in the rough so to speak. But, then again, this isn't our top 50 list.

December 31st, 2008 — Jack Fleming, golf courses, golf round, hidden gem
Today I played Gleneagles Golf Course in McLaren Park San Francisco (map).
This course is a hidden gem. We played on a Friday morning at 7am and no tee time was required. Unbelievaable!
Jack Fleming was the architect. Founded in 1962.
9 holes (but 2 different sets of tees to make 18 distinct holes). All 18 holes plays to a par 71. 5860 yards. Rating 69.8. Slope 138.
As you can see from the slope this is a hard course. It feels short on many holes but several holes are very long. The course is very hilly and at times very narrow with small greens.
Tough topography, slick greens, tall large mature trees, and afternoon winds make this links-style layout not for the faint hearted.
The price is right... $15-$18.50 for 9 holes, $23-$30.50 for 18.
If there is a knock on this course it is the condition. In places it was rather poor, but given the price one wouldn't expect Pebble Beach. However, the greens in great shape -- they putted true and fast.
I was able to par the final 2 holes which saved what up to that point had been a pretty poor round. If you can't find the fairway from the tee this is golf course it nearly impossible. Of course, that can be said of many many courses.
