June 5th, 2009 — DVD Review
While we normally cover books in this section, this DVD just about threw itself in our cart and since it is a Dummies title, we decided to see what it had to offer. If you're more of a visual learner or if you just don't have the time to sit down and read, this is a great way to learn about golf and see if you're ready for the challenge. If you're already a golfer, there are some great tips inside and the way the information is presented makes it very easy to put them to use. After all, what good are golf tips if you can't see the way you should implement them?
Gary McCord is a well known CBS commentator and wrote the original book that this DVD is based on. He actually hosts the DVD so fans will appreciate learning from the master first hand. The DVD starts out with learning how to handle each individual course you'll plan on. From figuring out the types of clubs you'll need to use to make par, to learning how to tell what kind of shot you're going to need from the tee, this is information that you can really use. Scorecards are explained which is great for new players as well as those of us that still get stumped occasionally.
The DVD also covers two things that plague millions of golfers - the hook and the slice. You'll get some great tips on correcting both and learn how to perfect your swing. This part of the DVD was worth the cost alone, since it is so similar to an actual lesson that you would receive from a pro. That will cost a lot more than $18, and you wouldn't have the benefit of learning from home, and at your own pace.
That perhaps is the strongest point of the entire DVD. You can go over the same part again until you understand it, and you'll be able to move at your own pace. Need to focus on just one aspect of the game, use the menu to jump ahead. The DVD is well designed and makes it easy to navigate back and forth to each section at will very quickly.
Overall, we really enjoyed this DVD and found that it had a lot to offer any level of golfer. Sometimes, you just need to see something instead of reading about it and this DVD did a great job of really illustrating what they were talking about. We're all for books and you can get some terrific tips in them, but for a lot of golfers, this DVD will make a big difference in their game. It makes a terrific gift for any golfer, and can easily be watched time and time again. We highly recommend it and were very glad that we took a chance on it. A rare find that definitely made it to the top of our list of favorites.

March 10th, 2009 — DVD Review, Golf Ball Driver, Tips and Tricks
If you are looking for a great DVD that will help you improve your swing, this one may be just the ticket. There are literally hundreds of different golf instructional DVDs on the market and many fail to deliver. This is one exception that proves just how useful this medium is at helping golfers. For those struggling to perfect their swing, going to an expert like Jim McLean is often the perfect answer. For those that can’t quite pay for personal lessons, Jim will come to you in this new DVD.
If you have already read McLean’s book with the same title,
this DVD is the extension of those techniques. He highly recommends (as do we) videotaping your swing and that will certainly come in handy. This is a great way to tell what’s wrong with your swing, especially if you can’t quite “feel” it yet. In fact, you may be surprised when you see your form in action and this step alone can help you take your game to the next level.
McLean breaks down your entire swing into eight parts, tweaking each step of the way until it’s time to put everything together. We’ve found that this is a very effective way to teach a player how to swing and to help a pro figure out where they are going wrong. All of the advice here is definitely top notch and very easy to follow. He’s done a great job of making everything easy to understand and pick up quickly.
There are some bonus features on this disc that you don’t want to miss including bunker shots, putting tips and some extra help on figuring out what may be going wrong with your game. The bonuses are so good they are easily worth the cost of the DVD and it’s nice to see these little extras thrown in, especially since the main part of the DVD focuses entirely on your swing and no other areas of the game.
We highly recommend this DVD to anyone regardless of how experienced they are at golf. The newest newbie will get a solid foundation for a great start in the game, while the oldest pro can still pick up some great tips to further tweak their swing. This is an area of golf where there is almost always room for improvement, unless you’re Tiger Woods, so this DVD will certainly come in handy. It would make a great holiday gift for a golfer on your list, or as a great instructional if you’re personally having some swing issues.
The price is reasonable, especially if you can pick up a copy online and for the money, this is easily one of the best swing instructionals we have found. You’d spend a lot more on lessons and you wouldn’t be getting the full benefit of having a pro like McLean show you the ropes. This is a solid buy and one that you certainly won’t regret.

March 10th, 2009 — DVD Review, Golf Ball Driver, fred couples
When it comes to instructional golf DVD’s the content can be a bit dry, but this was one DVD that completely broke that mold. By incorporating funny little movies, and some world class tips from professional golfers, The Ultimate Golf Learning Experience is really just that. Whether you’re brand new to the game, or just looking for a few tips to shave off some points, this one is well worth the time.
You’ll be getting four DVDs with this package, but they are all double sided. In total, the run time is more than 900 minutes, so you are certainly getting your money’s worth here. We were surprised at just how much was crammed onto this collection, and considering the overall low price, we would have been happy with just two DVDs. It’s always nice to see an instructional DVD that over delivers.
Experts like Fred Couples, Tom Kite and many others are all included here, sharing their tips on how to improve your game. The collection featured a good mix of short useful tips, combined with more intensive instruction. You won’t run the risk of getting bored with this one and the methods of teaching are very engaging and quite fun.
Our favorite DVD was the fourth, which covers everything you learned in the first three, and provides you with step by step instructions on how to get everything done. If you’re on a limited time schedule and you already have some experience in golf, go ahead and skip to this one to save time. You’ll still be getting the benefit of the entire series, but you’ll be able to just get right to the point.
Game drills are provided to help you improve your skills and keep putting the lessons learned to good use. Beginners will truly like Disc One since it covers everything you could ever possibly need to know about golf, and then some. Disc 2 has some great lessons from Wally Armstrong, which definitely should not be missed. Disc 3 is really more about the tools you can use and is more of a sales DVD, so again, if you’re pressed for time, you can skip this DVD and get on to the fourth one.
Overall, this is the perfect golf instructional DVD for beginners, but pros won’t feel left out either. The tips on how to beat a scratch golfer are worth the cost of the collection alone and there are numerous other lessons that would cost a pretty penny if you were getting them from the on-course pro. The Ultimate Golf Learning Experience is quite possibly the best teaching tool we’ve come across in a long time and we highly recommend it.
This would be the perfect gift for any golfer, and for those that are sick of watching instructionals, the included short movie is terrific for a laugh. It stars Gordon Jump, best known as the Maytag Repairman, and it is also well worth the time. If you get only one golf DVD this year, this should be it.
