Caddie Sense By Michael Carrick and Steve Duno

Caddies are often an overlooked part of golf, but without them, many of today’s pros would not be where they are. If you have ever wondered what the game of golf looks like through the eyes of a caddie, this book will open up a whole new world to you and a brand new way to look at how you play golf. Most of us don’t have the benefit of the council from a caddie while we play golf, but with this book, it’s almost like having one right beside you, offering tips and guidance.

The book starts out with an introduction into the life of a caddie. There is more to it than just hauling around a bag of clubs and occasionally offering advice on a lie. Caddies need to be just as well versed in the game of golf as those that play it. Although most people do not dream of being a professional caddie there are many that do make quite a good living at this job and they have picked up some amazing tips along the way. These two authors are an excellent example of professional caddies that truly know their job and the game of golf.

Next, the book covers how the relationship between a golfer and a caddie works. This is an interesting study on the dynamic of this sometimes complex relationship and offers insight into what caddies do, what they shouldn’t do and how much influence they can have over a golfer as well as their game.

It really gets good by the third section however, especially if you are looking for tips from the pros. The authors have caddied for some of the game’s best and brightest players and they offer some truly remarkable tips that will benefit any golfer. In addition to these tips, advice is also given about specific course, how to read different lies and what you need to know about the clubs you are using. When it comes to instruction, this is definitely a different approach from the usual pro/student lesson, but it does offer a rare view into another insight and in many cases, it is this insight that will make the real difference in how you play golf.

We highly recommend this book to golfing pros and novices alike. It is always helpful to have someone else’s viewpoint on an issue, and a caddie is a very beneficial friend to have on the course. If you have always wondered what it would be like to have this kind of guidance while you play, this book is a rare find that just about does that. Read it a few times and take notes. There are some great tips inside that will benefit any golfer, regardless of their skill level and experience. It’s also a great book for anyone that is thinking about being a caddie, either for a summer or as a long term career.
