Trailing the world no. 1 and the overwhelming favorite Tiger Woods by two strokes, Yang was ranked at 110th in the world. He managed to keep his composure despite the difficult winds at the Hazeltine National course, firing a two under par for 70. He managed to snatch the lead for the first ever time after spectacularly chipping in from just past the green, taking an eagle with a drivable par 4 on the 14th hole which brought him well on the way to an 8 under with a total of 280.

Although Yang did manage to collect a second bogey on that day with a three put on the 17th hole, he still managed to finish with a birdie, striking what was a truly superb approach over a three to reach ten feet away from the par four, sinking the putt coolly. He managed to punch his right fist in complete celebration before he put both hands above his head, acknowledging the massive roars from the gallery that was huge and packed all around the 18th's green.

Yang says that he has tried hard to master the elusive art of controlling emotions all throughout his career, and he says that he thinks he did quite well this weekend. The beaming 37 year old spoke through an interpreter as he was interviewed following the tournament. He said that he thought it would be a crazy party for his fans and friends, and other supporters who were watching the final round coverage for the tournament on television back in South Korea.

Tiger Woods, who was pursuing a 15th major title but only a first major title for the year, missed four separate birdie puts from 12 or less feet, carding what was a rather erratic 75 with five bogeys and only two birdies.

The man who is regarded as being the best closer in the entire game, at 33 years old, seemed to stumble to the finish with bogeys on both of the last two remaining holes. With matching 70s, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy both tied, sharing third place at 3 under for a total of 285.

This was the first time that Woods was unable to triumph in a major championship after he held at least some share of the lead in 54 holes, especially after having accomplished this feat to clinch the fourteen previous titles in his name. He told reporters, after he totaled 33 putts overall in the round, that he hit the ball better than his score was indicating, but he made absolutely nothing.
