At the British Open Championship, Tom Watson and Stewart Cink found themselves in a four-hole playoff battle. Here is a breakdown of the action, hole by hole.
At the fifth hole, a 474 yard hole with a par of four, Watson teed off first. Both are immediately in good shape, as Watson ends up in the fairway and Cink takes the bunkers out of play. Cink shoots first, rolling into a bunker at about 217 yards. Watson ends up short from 191 yards and ends up in another bunker. Then Cink goes first, getting out of the bunker and arriving at a par putt. Watson at this point had a much longer way to go. Watson lagged a par putt close to the hole, tapping it in to take a bogey. Cink dropped the ball in with nine feet straight up hill for a final score of Cink, 4 and Watson, 5.
At the sixth hole, a 231 yard hole with a par of three, Cink's initial shot bounced off of a mound and rolled safely onto the ground. Watson's initial shot rolls badly to the right where he does not have a view of the green. Watson managed to follow up with a fantastic shot, but he still needed between 9 and 10 feet to reach par. Cink managed to miss a birdie putt but hit par. Watson managed to make par after all, but Cink is still leading by a stroke. At this point, Cink is at 7 and Watson, 8.
At the seventeenth hole, a 559 yard hole with a par of five, both men hit their balls into the rough. Watson's ball proves more difficult to locate, and nothing can be done for it except to punch it out of the rough. It takes a third shot to get it to the fairway. Cink manages to putt his ball safely to the green. Watson ended up missing his par putt, giving Cink total control over the playoff. Cink managed to miss an eagle putt, but he tapped it in for a birdie, making the 18th hole nothing more than a formality after Watson only managed to sink a bogey putt on this hole. At this point, Cink is looking at 11 and Watson 15.
At the eighteenth and final hole, a 461 yard hole with a par of four, Cink didn't seem interested in giving any openings to Watson. Cink managed to hit to about two feet with his second shot, just running the score up at this point. Watson misses to the left from 260, then comes up short with a chip shot so he's forced to take another, almost rolling the ball in this time. Watson finally taps the ball in for a bogey, and Cink is left to make his birdie which allows him to claim the Claret Jug. Final score? Cink, 14, Watson, 19.
