This week in golf featured the Bridgestone Invitational, held at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. This course/tournament combination is well known, as it is often considered one of Tiger Wood’s favorite locations to play. Some of the big names that played in the tournament include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood, Vijay Singh, Mike Weir, Ian Poulter, K.J. Choi, Y.E Yang, Boo Weekley, Justin Rose, Matt Kutchar, Justin Leonard, Ernie Else, Rickie Fowler, Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington, and Rory McIlroy.
Unfortunately, Tiger Woods got off to one of the worst starts in his history as a professional. Struggling wildly over the course of the day, Tiger posted a first round 74. To put this into perspective, the leader after the first day was Bubba Watson, who fired off a 64 to go into the clubhouse with a two-stroke lead. Graeme McDowell and Phil Mickelson were tired for second place, after both men fired off 66s for the day.
The second round saw more of the same, with Tiger Woods struggling to a 2-over 72. Bubba Watson struggled slightly, shooting a 1-over 71 to drop into a tie that fell 2 shots behind the leader. Retief Goosen emerged after the second day, hitting some nice shots for a 66, giving him 7-undr after the first two round of play. Phil Mickelson continued to play well, behind by only one shot and tied with Justin Leonard.
The third round of play saw more struggles from Tiger Woods. Woods broke his record for his worst first half start with his first two rounds and continued to break his own personal records. His first round 74 was his worst at Bridgestone, until the third round. Woods hacked his way to a 5-over 75, which put him at 20 shots behind the leader at the tournament. Phil Mickelson struggled somewhat as well, turning in a 1-over 71 to fall down the leaderboard. This round put Mickelson in 10th pace heading into the final round. Hunter Mahan surprised everyone, posting a 66 after a first round 71 and a second round 71. Mahen launched into 7th place with his third round effort. Goosen fell to 16th after a third round 73, opening the doors for Ryan Palmer. Palmer’s incredible 63 gave him a small lead heading into the final round of play.
At this point, few believed that things could get worse for Tiger Woods. Woods managed to break his own personal worst-at-Firestone record, firing a 77 in his final round. Woods finished in a tie for 78th place – only two strokes behind the last place finisher. This second-to-last finish is Tiger’s worst in a tournament. Mickelson also struggled mightily in the fourth round, firing a 78 to land himself in a tie for 46th. At the end of the day, the tournament belonged to Hunter Mahan, who came from behind to win the tournament. Mahan posted a 64 to finish two strokes ahead of Ryan Palmer and three strokes ahead of Retief Goosen and Bo Van Pelt.
