6 - As a useful guide regarding the length and the force of the swing that is required for this purpose, you should be imagining that you are playing a shot from the fairway that is twice as long as the one that is actually facing you while you are standing in the sand. So if you have a 30 foot bunker shot on your hands, pretend that you are trying to create the force for a 60 foot pitch from the fairway. This is going to compensate for the cushioning effect that the sand has on the ball at the point of impact.
There is another situation where you are going to want to throw away the typical bunker shot, or at least the textbook. When you are playing from a plugged lie or a buried lie, it is going to call for a change to your club, your swing and your address position.
Exploding from the Buried Lie
1 - When the ball is somewhat buried, you are going to need to make use of your pitching wedge rather than your sand wedge. The design of your sand wedge encourages a club head to slide through the sand, and that is unfortunately not ideal with where you are at right now. Here, what you are going to need is for the club head to dig down into the sand that is underneath the ball is that the relatively sharp leading edge will achieve this task.
2 - Now you are not going to want to open the club face up during the address, and you should not be opening your stance up either. Instead, you should be standing square to the target and you should have your club head square and with the ball back in your stance in the direction of the right foot.
3 - With all of the elements of your best possible set up in place, you are going to want to commit yourself to being relatively aggressive when it comes to this shot. On the backswing you are going to want to pick the club head up a little bit more than you normally would for a typical or traditional type of bunker shot.
4 - Now you are going to want to concentrate on striking downward into the sand behind where the ball is. Make sure that your left wrist remains completely rock solid during the impact and through it, and do not be afraid to hit down as hard as you can.
5 - A lot of the sand is going to be lifted up, so you are going to want to be able to generate a whole lot of forward momentum in order for you to clear the front lip of that bunker when you strike it up and out.
Okay, now lets move on to part three.
