One of the keys that relates to becoming a better player in the bunker is to understand that the bounce effect that is created by the sole on the sand wedge, which is designed especially for such a purpose, is going to be best when you utilize it while the clubface is open. What this means is that the clubface needs to be aligned just to the right of the target. What this means, above all else, is that the set up for this process is absolutely crucial.
Mastering the Regular Splash shot
1 - You are going to need to open up your stance. You can do this by aligning your body, including your hips, your shoulders and your feet just to the left of the intended target. Now you should shuffle your feet down a bit into the sand in order to provide a secure footing and then adopt a slightly wider stance than what is normal for you. Try to feel settled down over the ball. Now you should take your grip, but you should be making sure that the club face is left open in relation to the stance, and is pointing out and just a little bit to the right of the target.
2 - Now you are going to want to take the club back along the line of your two feet, making sure that you are maintaining the open alignment of your club face.
3 - As the club is swung back, you are going to want to hinge your wrists in order to set it on a plane that is just slightly steeper. You are going to want to ensure that the club face is left open through the impact. If the club face is allowed to close, then the ball is going to fly to the left and far too far.
4 - Now in the downswing you are going to want to accelerate the club head smoothly through the sand underneath the ball. This is going to create what is known as a splash effect. You should not be trying to remove a lot of sand from the bunker - Just the ball.
5 - The open club face, when combined with the out to in swinging path is going to send the ball floating so that it is going straight in the direction of the flag. This is really what good play in the bunker is all about - It is about having the confidence enough to splash your club head right into the sand at the proper angle of descent, as well as trusting that the design of the club is going to do the rest of the work for you.
Let's move on to part two.
