Paul Azinger who was responsible for leading the United States Ryder cup team into victory this year has announced that he does not plan on returning as captain for the U.S. Ryder cup team for the 2010 matches, which are to be held in Wales. His victory was a great one as he led his U.S. Ryder cup team to victory, ending a three-match winning streak that Europe was holding in order to take the lead.
"All that I can say right now is that it is not going to be me," is what Azinger was quoted as telling golfworld.com earlier this week. He promised that it would become apparent who the new U.S. Ryder cup captain would be, come Thursday.
It is expected that the PGA of America is going to name the new up and coming U.S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2010 matches later this week.
Azinger, who had previously spoken to Golf World to say that he had no real interest in returning as a captain for the team, would not go into any further detail when he was asked about whether he was ever contacted about retaining the captain position.
As far as the tournament is concerned, Europe had previously held the trophy since 2002, and had won the last two matches by record scores. This was, of course, until Azinger revamped the entire qualification process, giving himself four captain's picks and leading a team to victory despite the team being short it's number one player, Tiger Woods.
Losing a team captain after only a year of service is certainly not unusual, as the United States Ryder Cup team has not had the same captain for two Ryder Cups successively since 1949 when Ben Hogan was the captain of the team. The last time that a captain who had previous experience coaching the Ryder Cup returned to lead the United States team again was Jack Nicklaus, which occurred in 1987. This is because he had already served a year term as captain back in 1983.
Although it is as yet unknown who the U.S. Ryder cup team captain will be for the golf matches that are going to be held in 2010, speculations are that it may be someone who has experience with coaching the team in the past. Although it is clear at this point that Paul Azinger will not be the U.S. Ryder Cup team captain in the upcoming season, what is not yet clear is whether he made the decision himself or if the PGA in America had another idea as far as who should be coach for the 2010 Ryder Cup matches.
