This week in golf featured the AT&T National Tournament, held at Aronimink Golf Club in Newton Square, PA. The defending champion of the tournament was Tiger Woods. The field featured plenty of big names, including Justin Rose, Stuart Appleby, Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods, Ricky Barnes, Boo Weekly, and Rocco Mediate.
The first round of the tournament saw plenty of surprises, with unexpected leaders and unexpected disappointments. Davis Love III struggled with a first round 78, while Y.E. Yang came in with a first-round 75. Tiger Woods struggled somewhat with a first round 73. Players leading after day one included Joe Ogilvie, Jason Day, and Nick Watney. Each player fired a first round 66.
Tiger Woods continued his birdie-less ways, flirting with the cut line after a second round par-70. Justin Rose fired the most impressive round of golf of the day, and in the end, the tournament. Justin shot a 64 to head into the clubhouse with a one-stroke lead. Vijay Singh continued his run back to the top of his game, firing a first round 71 and a second round 70.
While Tiger Woods managed to stay above the cut line, other big names failed to do the same. Boo Weekely missed the cut despite a second-round 69, thanks to his first-round 76. Rocco Mediate fired a 74 to miss out on the second half of play. Rickie Fowler shot a 77 after a first round 69, dropping him out of the tournament as well. Davis Love III faired the worst of the big names in the tournament, thanks to his difficult first round. His second round score of 72 was not enough to keep him above the cut line.
The third round failed to see a leader change, as Justin Rose held his own at the top with a third round 67. Charlie Wi entered the fourth day in second place, after a solid first three rounds of 69, 65, and 70. Vijay Singh climbed to 9th with a third round 67. Tiger Woods continued his struggles, firing a third round identical to his second with a par-70.
The fourth round saw plenty of action and excitement. Tiger Woods fired a 71, marking the first time that he has failed to break par on any one of his four days of play in over 10 years. Woods finished at a dismal 46th with his +4, 14 shots behind the leader. That leader was Justin Rose, who managed to hang on with a final-round 70 to win his second tournament of the year. Rose finished one stroke ahead of Ryan Moore, who finished second. Jeff Overton was third, with Charlie Wi dropping to fourth. Vijay Singh held his ground at 9th, with Ricky Barnes ending up at 16th.
Next week will see plenty of tune-ups for the upcoming British Open. Tiger Woods will be playing a pro-am in Ireland while rival Phil Mickelson will play at the Scottish Open. Mickelson has the opportunity to overtake Tiger for the Number 1 ranking this week at the Scottish Open.
