Marshall Smith is one of the most recognizable names in golf instruction, and if you’ve ever wished you could get a lesson with him, this book has the whole experience down to a tee. You’ll feel just like you’re right with Smith, learning and growing as a golfer. If you can’t afford regular instruction, or you are just looking for a few great tips that will help your game improve, this is one of the few books that is an absolute must read, and one that may change the way you play golf permanently.
In just ten brief chapters, Smith manages to distill everything he has taught for the past fifty years. Don’t let the length fool you, there is solid information here, and many of these tips cannot be found anywhere else. His style, bolstered by Denunzio is breezy and this is definitely an easy read. There are few instructional books in this sport that you can read cover to cover, and this is easily one of the best we’ve come across. It’s just too easy to keep on reading, even if you already think you’ve mastered that section. Chances are however, you may be able to pick up a few great tips this way.
Our favorite chapter was Five, making fairway woods your friends. This has some really great information and it’s common that these clubs are ignored or avoided, when they may actually drastically improve the way that you play the game. Read this one at least twice, especially if you are looking for ways to improve your second shots and get on the green in a lot less time.
We also enjoyed Chapter Nine that covers how sometimes practice makes perfect, and sometimes, it can actually hamper your efforts. This is another chapter that you’ll want to really study and think about. There are some great little bits of information hidden in there that will really get your mind whirling if you think about it after reading it.
Each chapter is truly worth the cost of the book, and it’s a whole lot cheaper than an actual lesson from a pro. Truthfully, after reading this book, you may able to save all of that money and just hit the course.
We really can’t say enough nice things about this book and would recommend it to anyone that is looking to improve their golf game. There is something in there for golfers of all ages and all skill levels and it’s hard to find a book that can speak to the masses without leaving someone behind. Smith’s book exceeded our expectations and we would happily recommend it to anyone that is serious about the game of golf – or would like to be. It would make a great gift for the struggling golfer, and it could be one of the best investments you ever make in your game.
