92nd PGA Championship

This week in golf featured the final major of the year, the PGA Championship. This was the 92nd PGA Championship, and was held at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. Per usual for a major, the field was incredibly difficult, featuring: Bubba Watson, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Justin Leonard, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Rickie Fowler, Book Weekely, Padraig Harrington, Kenny Perry, Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell, Stuart Appleby, Mike Weir, Justin Rose, Angel Cabrera, and Trevor Immelman.

The first round featured plenty of excitement, as both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson looked to come back after a few weeks of poor results. Thanks to darkness, Phil had to stop after the first day of play after 11 holes. Mickelson ended around the same location as Tiger Woods, falling behind the leaders of Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar, and Ernie Els.

The second round of play was hodge-podge at best, thanks to the delays caused by lack of light. Tiger Woods didn’t wind up teeing off until later afternoon, much like many in the field who didn’t make it beyond the fourth hole of the course. At least half of the field wound up halting during their second round, needing to move to the third day. With that being said, there were some players who shined, and some who struggled, in this round. Phil Mickelson shot a 69 after his first round 73. Rory McIlory fired a 68, and Jason Dufner fired a 66.

Plenty of big names failed to make it into the weekend, with the cut held at +2. Padraig Harrington had a first round 75 and second round 71, keeping him one stroke from the weekend. Other players who failed to make it through included Kenny Perry (+2), Boo Weekley (+2), Sergio Garcia (+2), Justin Rose (+4), Scott Verplank (+3), Graeme McDowell (+3), and Mike Weird (+4).

The third round featured a record-breaking moment that featured a break of the course record, set by Wen-Chong Liang. Lian shot a 64 on the course. Third round scores to note included Martin Kaymer’s 67 (taking him to 4th place), Phil Mickelson’s 73 (dropping him to 48th), and Tiger Wood’s 72, dropping him to 31st.

The final round featured plenty of excitement and entertainment. Jeff Overton set the speed record, playing in the final pairing and eventually playing as a single. In leaderboard news, Kaymer, Bubba Watson, and Dustin Johnson all tied, bringing about what should have been a three-way tie breaker. Dustin Johnson was called for grounding his club on the last whole, however, making it a two-man race. Kaymer and Watson traded the first two holes of the 3-hole playoff, leading to hole #12 as the decider. Kaymer bogeyed the third hole, but Watson Double-bogeyed the hole, giving Kaymer his first major win.
