If you’re just starting out in golf, or you have always wanted to know how to play, there are a few things that you will need to know before you get started. Golf is an incredible sport, but there are a lot of things to learn. By paying attention early on and building a strong foundation now, you’ll be able to quickly build up your skills and become a better golfer. Even if you only plan to play occasionally, these tips will help you get off on the right foot.
1. Find the right instructor.
This is vital for any golfer and instructors are useful no matter how experienced you may be. Your local golf course should have at least one pro on staff that offers lessons. It is a good idea to try out a few different pros to see if you like the way that they teach and the methods that they use. If an instructor is just not explaining things in a way that you can understand, it may hold you back. You may also want to invest in some instructional DVDs or videos, and purchase a few books on the subject to get a better grasp of basic technique.
2. Don’t rush the initial phase.
For many new golfers, the desire to just get out there and play is so strong, that you can lose sight of how important the fundamentals are. This can lead to frustration and you may end up giving up. In order to get a good start and stay motivated, you have to go through the training phase. It does take time to learn proper techniques, but this is time that is definitely well spent.
3. Practice whenever possible.
The only way to get better at golfing is to do it as frequently as you can. Each round is a lesson that will help you improve your swing, get better at chipping or finally figure out how to gauge distance and power on your putts. If you don’t practice, chances are you’ll never be able to get beyond the initial stage of learning, unless you have a lot of raw natural talent. Even in this case, if you don’t channel it properly, you may be selling yourself short.
4. Work on your mental game.
Golf is a game that is 90% mental. Before you pick up a club, you need to understand the mental aspects of the sport and develop a good mental “game” in your head. There are some great books on this subject that can assist beginners in learning how to get the right mindset, and how having it will improve your game. By taking the time to learn about the mental aspect of golf, you can be assured that the rest of your game will fall into place.
The most important thing to remember about golf is that it should be fun. Never lose sight of this and keep the right perspective. Chances are, you’ll end up enjoying your time on the course as a result, instead of dreading it.
