Steve Stricker managed to take the win at the 2009 Deutsche Bank Championship, and this has moved him up into first place for the points face with the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He managed to win a total of 2,500 points this week for taking the win at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and this has given him enough points to allow him to leapfrog right over Tiger Woods in the overall standings.
Leading in the points race for the playoffs is not actually new territory for Steve Stricker, who took the lead away from Tiger Woods during the first FedEx Cup playoffs back in the year 2007. The post season went on to see him winning the Barclays and moving into the lead for the FedEx Cup points.
If he wants to be able to hold onto his points lead for the upcoming two weeks, then Stricker is going to need to do more than simply fend Tiger Woods off. The next leg of this tournament is going to offer more movement and more volatility, placing a much larger premium on the championship for this tour. The playoff events are worth a surprising 5 times more than their regular on-season counterparts, so the points are vitally important right now.
