This week in golf featured the British Open, known as the 139th Open Championship. This year’s tournament was held at the historic St. Andrews course, providing plenty of ups and downs in what will easily be considered a wild an unexpected tournament. All of the big names in Golf showed up for the event, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Ernie Else, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Steve Stricker, Mike Weir, Padraig Harrington, and even Tom Watson.
The first day of play at St. Andrews featured amazing weather and even more amazing scores. Rory McIlroy walked away from the first round with a 63, tying a record for the lowest round at the major. The incredible score put him at 9-under par. John Daly was somewhat surprising, shooting a 66 during the first round and putting himself into contention. Tiger Woods managed a 67, while players like Tom Watson struggled to a 73. Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa was in second after the first round of golf, posting up a 7-under 65.
The second round of play at St. Andrews will be talked about for weeks, months, and possibly even years. The conditions at St. Andrews were simply horrid, with play being stopped for over an hour because of the strong winds that swept across the course. Rory McIlroy posted up at 80, while Tiger Woods shot a 73. The players who played later in the day had more issues than those who played earlier. Rory’s decline allowed Oosthuizen to run up to first, thanks to a second round score of 67. There were some players who managed to miss the cut, which was held up at +2. Justin Rose, Bubba Watson, Ernie Els, Mike Weir, Tom Watson, Angel Cabrera, Justin Leonard, Padraig Harrington, and Davis Love III all missed the cut.
The third round of play saw Oosthuizen pull away from the field, taking a four shot lead over Paul Casey. Casey shot a third round 67 to go with his pair of 69’s in the first two rounds. Tiger Woods continued to struggle, only managing another 73 despite the slightly improved course conditions. John Daly continued his fall from the top, posting a 74 after a second-round 76. Phil Mickelson, who shot a first round 73 and second round 71 managed a third-round 70.
In the end, the tournament belonged to Oosthuizen, who held on for his first Major title with a fourth-round 71. Oosthuizen won with a comfortable 7-stroke lead, finishing at 16-under for the tournament. Lee Westwood moved up to second, putting in a 70 to land at 9-under. Players like Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods were left with more questions than answers, as both struggled to make their mark. Woods finished T-23 at 3-under, while Mickelson finished a dismal T-48 with his +1 performance.
