Ace - This is another word for a hole in one, or to shoot one when used as a verb.
Address - This is the position that a player takes when they are preparing for a shot. It is also used as a verb, describing the act of taking a position, such as in "address the shot".
Aggregate - This is a score that is made by two players who are serving as partners, or over the span of more than a single round of play.
Airball - This is a swing that does not make contact with the golf ball.
Albatross - This is an obsolete word that was once used to describe a double eagle.
Amateur - This is a golfer that plays for fun rather than for money or notoriety.
Approach Shot - This is a short range or a medium range shot that is played into the green on the course.
Apron - This is the grass area that is surrounding around the putting surface, and it is also regularly regarded as the fringe.
Attack - This refers to playing in an aggressive manner.
Automatic - This describes an easy put.
Away - This describes the ball that is furthest from the hole, or whichever golfer the ball belongs to. The golfer that is the furthest away will shoot first in the next round.
Back Door - This is the rear side of the hole. When a put goes around the actual hole and then drops in at the back, it is said to be back doored.
Back Lip - This is the bunker's edge that is the furthest from the hole.
Back Nine - This is the second set of 9 holes when you are playing on a course of 18 holes.
Back Side - This is another term that is used to describe the back nine.
Back Spin - This is a backward spin around the horizontal axis of the ball, allowing the ball to either stop or to roll backward upon landing.
Back Swing - This is the portion of the club swing where the club is taken back and over the head from the ground.
Baffy - This is an obsolete 5-wood that has the loft of a 3 iron or a 4 iron. Sometimes this term is applied to the 4-wood club.
Bail Out - This means to avoid trouble or to get out of trouble. Generally, there are actually two different types of senses here. One way of bailing out is to make a long putt. The other method of bailing out is to hit a safer shot rather than risking putting the ball into a potential hazard by playing in a risky manner.
Ball - This is the instrument that is struck in attempt to get it in a hole. The covering is typically a hard rubber or a synthetic material that is covered with dimples or surface indentations.
