The downswing needs to be perceived as being a reaction rather than simply being an action. Everything that is going to happen is going to depend on what has already happened. This is why your grip, your alignment, your posture and your backswing are all so important when it comes to hitting the ball. For every single link in this chain that is performed correctly, the chances of having everything go right at the time of impact are going to increase significantly. Remember that your downswing is one constant, continuous motion, and you should be swinging through each position rather than to one.
Clicking the downswing into place:
1 - The transition period from the end of your backswing into the beginning of your downswing is absolutely crucial. You should try to feel that you are starting your downswing with just a subtle move of the left knee in the direction of the target, and you should be combining this with a gradual shift of your weight onto your let foot. This is referred to as the act of leg separation.
2 - Now, the beauty behind this move is that it is going to initiate something of an unwinding of your torso and your hips, and this is going to automatically slot your arms and your hands down into the ideal position that will allow you to attack your ball from the inside.
3 - Now you are going to be well on your way to delivering the club head square into the back of your ball - Go for it!
4 - Through the impact, your hands and your arms are going to free wheel not only up but also around into the perfect position for follow through, and this is the mark of an excellent golf player.
5 - By this stage, it is far too late for you to do anything else in order to influence the outcome of your shot. Still, it is going to be a good idea for you to take this time to imagine yourself finishing in a manner that is poised and balanced and a position that exemplifies balance and poise. It is going to promote an action that is controlled and unhurried and this is going to remove any natural tendency for you to swing too hard.
You must absolutely look at the back swing and the down swing as creating one smooth swing. You should not be swinging into a position, but rather through a series of moves that are fluid from beginning to end. Remember that your downswing, like your back swing, is one constant, continuous motion, and you should be swinging through each position rather than to one specific position. Until the ball is flying through the air, you should still be swinging.
